PAGE 4 THE DIALETTE DECEMBER, 1967 Discount For Travel In Europe THE BLUE AND GOLD by Sully In the past three years, there has been a marked change in the Depart ment of Health, Physical Education and Recreation here at Montreat- Anderson College. Most of the credit for the de velopment can be given to the head of the Physical Education Depart ment, Charles Lawrence Wilson. Coach Wilson, as he is known to us around campus, was born and raised in Columbus, North Carolina. He attended Tryon High School un til the age of fifteen. While there he played on both the basketball and baseball teams. At the age of fif teen he attended Beria Foundation School of Kentucky in Beria, Ken tucky, where he received his high school diploma. After graduation, the coach pro- ceded to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at the most highly respected Physical Edu cation college in the country, Spring- field College, in Springfield, Mass achusetts. While at Springfield, the coach broadened his sports background by still continuing with basketball, but added track in his freshman year, and gymnastics in his sophomore year. He also met during the four years there Miss Judy Johnson, also a P. E. major. They were married one year after graduation, and both are now raising a fine family of three boys and one girl. While teaching in central New York, Coach Wilson pursued one of the courses in his minor - Health Education, (the other being history) and was granted his Master of Sci ence degree from New York State University at Courtland. ,, He and his wife then moved to Scancatcle, New York (17 miles from Syracuse) where he taught not only Physical Education, but also. Biology, was Director of Health, Physical Edu cation for the school district, was summer Director of Recreation Pro grams, and coached football, wrestl ing, basketball, and track. Before the coach came to Mon treat in August of ‘6,5, and develop- COURTESY CAB CO. A student attending Montreat in 1964 had no choice of Physical Edu- caion classes. He was put in either freshman P. E., which stressed team play, or Sophomore P. E. which de veloped the individual. The coach is also responsible for broadening the program now in effect here at Montreat. He has add ed cross-country, tennis, golf, and track. Not only has he developed these as classes, but all of these' sports have achieved varsity status. The coach states that when the proposed playing field is completed, varsity soccer, and perhaps even baseball will be added to our ever- improving schedule. Coach Wilson would still like to see a stronger athletic program for Montreat, to complete as a junior college program. This would mean an increase in staff members, and an increase in the recruiting program for athletics (which would involve scholarships, grants, etc.) On being aske.'l about the fut ure of Montreat, Coach Wilson stat ed; “I have a strong conviction that Montreat - Anderson College has a bright future, not only academically, but athletically, and I look forward to the day Montreat College will be on par or share par with the other junior colleges in the country. Be cause of its location and emphasis on Christian living it will have more td offer‘d the students than the aver age college.” It .is the belief of many students and instructors alike, that there is no beter man to serve the college and students as. coach than Larry Wilson. eason FROM FELLOWSHIP .
