VOL. 1 NO. 1 SEPTEMBER 20, 1968 PAGE 3 Russ Burgess Athletics Off On Right Foot in ’68 Basketball One thing is certain about the coming basketball season: there will be plenty of new faces. Along with a new coaching staff, several promising new players will wear the Montreat-Anderson colors for the first time. Practice will begin early in October, when the Cavaliers commence preparations for the opening of the season on November 18 th. If the playing personnel seems suited to that pattern of play, students and fans can expect an exciting fast-breaking style of play. From what I know of the personnel at this point, it would seem that the Cavaliers will possess an adequate supply of the two main ingredients for that style: size enough to get the ball off the defensive board and speed and ball-hdndling ability enough to execute the fast-break. Defense will be highly stressed. Much practice time will be devoted to the development of sound individual and team defense. Among the newcomers who are being counied on to contribute during ihe coming season are: Gary Fteble, Curtis Brooks, Richard Dillahunt, Charles Dudley, Robert Hunnicut, Roosevelt Robinson, Ben Young, Jim Norris, Sam Milner, and Bruce Rosemond. Two returnees from last year, Austin Brady and Bob Spinning, will have good experience to lend to a basically young and inexperienced team. You are urged to give your support to the 1968-69 basketbal lers. We hope that their play will make it easy for you to support them. Total P. E. Program The total health and physical education program with which Montreat-Anderson College is concerned consists of three aspects: the service program, intramurals, and intercollegiate athletics. Each phase is of equal importance. No program is complete unless each of these aspects is well-developed, co-ordinated, and integrated to best meet the needs of the entire student body. The emphasis of the service program is instructional. It is a process of education through activities, which are selected and carried on with regard to physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth. The intramural program is concerned with providing athletic competition for all students and faculty of M-A College. This program is of great importance by SATURDAY SEPT. 21, 1968 8 o^clock Moore Center Russ Burgess, formerly with the Department of Justice, is widely known for his lecture demonstrations in giving dl students an opportunity to develop*'‘^™'r"^°'> He not only the sHIU the,, hn„. he.„ t„„„ht te 4,. The intramural program at Montreat-Anderson is voluntary, providing healthy activity for the enjoyment of the physical, mental, and social training of its participants. It is the objective of the intercollegiate athletic program to provide the highly skilled individual the opportunity to compete at his proficiency level. The athletic program is also an invaluable media for bringing recognition to Montreat-Anderson. It is the sincere wish of the health and physical education department that the student body will take an active part in every phase of the program. Tennis With all of the leading players of a year ago returning, the outlook for the MAC tennis team appears bright. Led by Joe and Gene Fuller, Bill Ratteree, and Steve Austin, last year's netters finished with an outstanding record of 8-1. All of these boys will return and with a year's experience behind them, they should be improved. The main cogs will be the Fuller twins who lost only one match between them one year ago. Joe played brilliantly at number one and Gene was undefeated In number two position. Bill Ratteree, last year's number three, was only a step behind, however, and has the potential to play as high as number one. if a couple of freshmen tennis players can be turned up to combine with this trio and Steve Austin, the Cavaliers could have another successful tennis team. Soccer Opener Oct. 2 Bouncing off the toe of a successful soccer club program last year, the Cavaliers net their newest intercollegiate sport when practice begins, September 20. Coaches Alderman, Parks, and Mitchell will depend upon a nucleus of returning club members to form the backbone of the team. A strong representation from the Freshmen Class is expected to give the much needed depth, however. The kickoff for the eight-game schedule will be October 2, when Montreat will meet the experienced Brevard College team. That leaves only twelve days of practice, so hard work is expected in order to get prepared. Anyone interested in trying out for the team should report to the gym ready for practice at 3:00 this Friday. Buses will leave for the practice field at 3:15. Home games will be played on the field next to the Black Mountain Primary School. his audience, and he has a standing offer of $10,000 for any person who can prove that he gets help from anyone during a demonstration.
