ON CAMPUS By Harvey Davis "Rachel, Rachel" is the portrait of a middle aged spin ster facing her "last ascending year. Rachel is an elementary school teacher in a small mid-western town. She is the daughter of a stern and overbearing undertaker, whose sombre mood overshadows his family life. Having been raised in this atmosphere as a child, Rjchel is an object of ridicule to her peer group. She finds her best company in her dreams. She I ives out her mature years as an extreme introvert. For company, there is only her mother and a spinster companion with lesbian tendencies. Rachel, in fear of a declining future, makes an attempt to break out into the world of reality. She achieves this by means of a compromising affair with a city school teacher. She wants to become a more creative person by childbirth if by no other way. The superb acting of Joanne Woodward and the many talents of Paul Newman in his first role as producer-director make this film one of rare quality and insight. by Caesar GAMBIT (Color) 109 minutes Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine I BLACK MOUNTAIN DRUG CO. Last week after untold troubles and five hours of work, I turned my column in to be printed. This week's assignment proved equally rough. Let's start talking about the Student Union (Moore Center). This year it is far better than ever before. Under the hand of Fred Greene, it has become a swinging place to go anytime. Someone told me that spring was the time of year for lovers. Here at Montreat I find it different. All the changing colors covering the mountains make for a romantic atmosphere. But, as I look at the mountains, I notice a few couples are too busy to see the colors... Is that true BOB and JUDY? ATTENTION; THE INMEN ARE BACK. For all of you who saw them last year they are returning to bring you some more of their fine entertainment. Those who did not see them last year are in for a real mon-treat. I have heard that TINA is really keeping an eye on those freshmen gals in College Hall this year. Good luck, Tina. Intramurals this year seem a bit on the rough side. How about that DAVID, SAM and JEFF? The infirmary Is taking care of them now. Preparing for the opening game against Brevard, the soccer team elected David Walters and Steve Gragg as its captain. David , the right insider, and Stever, the center halfback, have proven themselves as leaders and should afford the leadership needed to direct the team to a winning season. We are still without outside lights in New Hall. We do not want broken legs on campus. COLLmS DEPT.STORE Mr. and Miss Student! This is one event you don't want to miss. SALE ENDS SATURDAY, October 12, 1968 Your store for Name Brand Fashions in Black Mountain XOW! donnery& rudd With the arrival on Montreat-Anderson College campus next week of Donney and Rudd, the first version of the College Coffee House will be underway for the new session. The entertainers who are to be sponsored by Fellowship Hall will be here for three days, beginning Thursday, October 3. In the evenings they will provide programs of contemporary and pop music and through the day they will be available for conversation about the worlds of music and entertainment. Montreat-Anderson College can take justifiable pride in the fact that it was one of the initial group of eight colleges and universities of this southeast region which introduced the Coffee House concept to the campus. The fact that there are now over 160 participating colleges in this area points to the enthusiastic acceptance of the original venture. By this means, a new dimension has been brought to the concept of entertainment for college residents. The entertainers come from the Bitter End Cafe In New York and appreciate this opportunity to perform before attentive and appreciative audiences. Through this kind of exposure many of them have broken into big time entertainment on a national scale. Such was the beginning for Peter, Paul and Mary, Josh White, Sr., the Serendipity Singers and many other well established groups. Montreat-Anderson College sophomores will recall visits from last year of Brian Carney, Roun McKinnon and Jake Holmes. They will remember also that no charge was made for the entertainment, a tradition which will be continued this year. Where would you like to travel during the coming year? Jamaica? Nassau? Europe? Sking? The college union activities board is surveying you, the students and faculty, to see where your travel interests lie. Trips are being planned for semester break, spring vacation, early summer, and on weekends throughout the year. These trips are being planned in co-operation between Montreat-Anderson College, the University of South Carolina, and the First National Bank Travel Service.
