DIGGINGS
This reporter's assignment was to cover
Dr. Dicken's lecture to the freshmen
history classes during chapel period Monday
morning. To his surprise the person
described to him as Dr. Dickens was
certainly not standing in front of the chapel
describing early Indian ruins and burial
sites. The informative talk was accompanied
with slides.
The alleged Dr. Dickens spoke on one
of the locations which the University of
North Carolina archaeological students
had been working on the previous three
summers. The site was believed to date
from the period around 1300-1500 A. D.
It was found under a corn field in the
western part of North Carolina. The
speaker outlined how the prospective
archaeologist and their professors underwent
the task of removing precious 600year old
artifacts. When the general area is
determined and uncovered, the site is
diagrammed and photographed. Then, as
each article is exposed, it is also
photographed and diagrammed. Next each
piece is carefully removed with the aid
of a "grapefruit knife" and fingers. Finally
the pieces are sent to Chapel Hill for
further study. This dig proved to be one
of the best.
The originally scheduled speaker.
Dr. Dickens phoned to express his regrets
that he could not be there. Pinch hitting
for him was Mrs. Kline, wife of the
Sociology professor at Warren Wilson College.

Look out, St. Pete is at the gate. Manoi
is so tough that he uses chemical mace for
deodorant and Earle Is putting land mines
in the speed breakers.
Wc all poke fun at the Montreat Fbllce
but few of us ever consider the grim
alternatives such as faculty police or none
at all.
After a discussion with Ffete Post, Mike
Manos, and Earle KIrkley, the'Caval ler"
considers the force competent in their
positions. The Montreat PdIice duties go
beyond the norm by upholding college and
community statutes. Vacant home
surveillance, checkmating undesirable
outside influences, and attending college
functions upon request are among the
extracurricular services.
Students find our busy officers always
willing to listen to problems with unusual
understanding. Ever tried debating a
patrolman? The police know our position
through experience as Montreat students.
Pste Fbst attended Montreat-Anderson
College and graduated in January, 1967.
Pete was the '65-'66 president of New Hall,
president of the Conservation Club and
lettered in football, basketball and
softball. He served on the Student
Government that liberalized the handbook
rules and formed the first honor court.
After Montreat, Ffete was married; attende^l
East Tennessee State University, and now
has an eleven month old girl named Jan.
Mike Manos graduated from Montreat
in January, 1968, Mike served as presideh
of Sylvan, vice-president of the first
Honor Court, and lettered in basketvall,
cross-country, football and softball.
Before coming to Montreat, Mike served
three years as sergeant in the Marine Corps.
He made top marine out of his outfit,
saw action, and was announced as South
Carolina's top marine in 1966.
Earle Kirkley is a well-known Montreat
sophomore. Earle served as a special
deputy during the riots at Columbia,
South Carolina last Easter. A member
of the National Rifle Association, he
also enjoys art and has many awards in
both fields. He plans to attend Florida
State University and major in Criminology.
A little seen member of the force Is
Thomas Morris who watches the gate from
midnight to 8 A. M. Mr. Morris has been
with the police for three years opening the
gate for late comers and providing an
open ear.
