NOVEMBER 23 SOUL, INC. 5M0U/ 2001 by Harvey Davis "2001 - A Space Odyssey" is the story of man's evolution into a superhuman creature. An ancient race, already advanced to this state is itself drawing near to extinction. Through the monolith's power to spark the intelligence of an animal, this superhuman race directs man to his ultimate destiny ... God? Forty million years ago on a planet named earth there was a race doomed to extinction, a race not of humans but of apes. This race of apes held the potential to become the human race. The evolution of man was not happening, for there was nothing to ignite the spark of intelligence in the man-apes, until in our day the monolith appeared. It had come at last, the spark, the power, and the long road of evolution had begun. The year 2001; man has fulfilled his evoluationary pattern ... or has he? Man has a permanent base on the moon. He is master of the machine and the computer, and has complete control of his environment. His advancements are now technological rather than evolutionary. Then one day, while exploring the moon, man discovers a strange, monolith, placed there some forty million years ago. The journey: man has monitored a burst of power from the monolith, directed toward the planet Jupiter. A manned mission to Jupiter was dispatched to find the destination of the energy-burst. The computer; Hal, nine thousand series ’ fail-safe incapable of error, constructed in Urbana, 1996. David Bowman, head of the ' mission to Jupiter, made a discovery. The impossible had happened. Hal had made an error. Bowman discussed the malfunction with members of the crew. The decision was made to disconnect. But how would Hal react? He was in control of the mission and , held the power of life and death over the crew. Hal did not succeed in his mechanical rebellion, but he did manage to kill four members of the crew. All died except David Bowman, who succeeded in disconnecting Hal. Bowman, having left the star-ship to explore the space around Jupiter, suddenly comes upon the monolith. The exploratory capsule plunges into a spectrum of color and sound, deeper and deeper into the fourth dimension. The rebirth; Bowman's capsule comes to rest on a world many dimensions distant from our solar system. He is in a hotel; slowly Bowman drifts into the setting, he grows old, then suddenly the monolith appears. Bowman reaches out to the monolith. He dies, but in his death he is born, born into a creature that can only be called a star-child. Man has finally reached his evolutionary potential. He is now in his godly or near godly form. The power of the universe is his. Stanley Kubrick has had an illustrious career as producer.
