BOOK
Andr^ Malraux has been an active
intellectual for roughly four decades. Unde
DeGaulfe, he was at one time Minister of
Culture. He has, grinning all the while,
faced a firing squad. Malraux has also known
such world figures as Gandhi, Nehru,Chou
En-Li, Mao, and so on, ad infinitum.
As a novelist, he is best known for
"Man's Fate, " a work dealing with the
turbulent China of 1927. This year, his
"Anti-Memoirs" have created a stir in the
literary world.
The modern reader, schooled in the
autobiography of self-revelations, will be
peeved with Malraux. Except for an unfinished
autobiographical novel included within,
Malraux says very little about Malraux.
No, he does not bare himself. But, he
strips away the public images of men like
the aforementioned with unsparing portraits
of leaders who have profoundly influenced
world affairs.
Lucid and precise, "Anti-Memoirs" is a
refreshing book. Though a departure from
conventional memoirs, it still touches a man
in this case an eyewitness to history. The
author's commanding, observant presence
communicates the feeling of "I was there.
I know how it was."
WHO’S mm
by Tom Behrens
Have you ever heard a jazzed up fugue
between a bass fiddle and trap drums?
Had you attended the "Play Bach" program
last Saturday night, this would not have
been all you heard. The Jacques Loussier
Trio performed many other creative and
inventive pieces as well.
They have become one of the top jazz
groups in Europe. There is little doubf in
the minds of many critics that this trio will
enjoy similar success in the United States.
The popular threesome's make-up consists
of a piano, bass, and drums, played by
Jacques Loussier, Pierre Michelot, and
Christian Garros, respectively. Each of them
is a versatile and superb musician. They
employ their instruments to the fullest degrees.
Solos and duets during the concert displayed
this fact. Mr. Loussier uses his imagination
and creates some delightfully interesting
configurations.
A somewhat sparse college representation
honored them with several standing ovations
in their appearance here November 9th.
It appears the student body was scared off
by the name "Bach." Unfortunately, many
of us relate Bjch's music to terms like boring,
melancholy, and "not for me. "
How can we do this when contemporary
composers still use some of his techniques?
The trio did a fine job of demonstrating how
happy and lively Bach's music can be.
According to reliable sources, they
may return.
AT THE INN
The next Sunday at the Inn concert will be
held December 3, in the Convocation-
Recital Hall in the Assembly Inn. It is the

of neglected masterworks in violin and
harpischord. Hope all music lovers will
place a red circle around the date
December the third and plan to attend at
3:30 p.m.
The Montreat-Anderson basketballers inauguate
their '68 season November 18 at 8 o'clock in a
home contest with Steed College from Johnson
City, Tennessee.
Last year, the S.C. five dumped Montreat
twice so the MAC cagers will seek revenge in
this the first game. The CAVALIERS will use
a basic man to man defense. However, the team
may also use a I - 3 - I zone press at times.
