A SRO crowd greeted the
Montreat-Anderson College Cavaliers
as they began their new basketball
season Monday, November 18. The
Cavaliers did not disappoint them
and gave Coach Bob Anderson’s
FIGHTING Broncos a 79-58 beating.
The Cavaliers played a "fast-
break offense" from the opening
tip-off to the final gun.
From the opening tip-off, it
was quite apparent Montreat had
a chance to beat the more
experienced and taller team from
Johnson City, Tennessee. Steed
College came here with seven
returnees from their ’67-’68 squad.
Montreat, on the other hand,
presented an all-freshman team.
After Steed College netted
the first field goal. Montreat
scored five straight points. The
Cavaliers continued to run and
built a lead. Montreat began the
game with a tight man to man
defense and double teamed the man
with the ball. This pressure
defense proved costly since
Hunnicut, Brooks, and Rosemond each
had three fouls at the end of the
first half. The team shifted to
a 2-3 zone defense late in the
opening half. Steed College played
a 2-3 the initial twenty minutes.
Montreat’s fast-breaking and
constant outside shoting were too
much for the Broncos. Montreat’s
chief problem was lack of rebounds
on the defensive backboard. Still,
as half-time the score was 98-29
in favor of Montreat.
Montreat kept its momentum
in the second half. Their lead
stretched to a high of twenty-eight
points, with eight minutes left in
the contest. High scorers for Steed
were Dubay, with twenty-two points,
and Hamby with eleven. Bruce
Rosemond led Montreat with twenty-
two pointsj Ben Young and Roosevelt
Robinson each added 16 and Robert
Hunnicut also canned ten. Four
other Cavaliers scored in a game
in which everyone got to play.
MAC finished the ball game with heavy
substitution.
Coach Halstead seemed pleased
with the team’s performance. He
explained "the team did not play as
a unit but it is great to get off to
a good start." He also added "the
team needs a lot of work on defense."
Assistant Coach Hughes was also proud
of the boys. He stated that "the
team got something by winning the
first game." Coach Hughes approach
to the season is simply "one game at
a time" and he believes "the student
body can make or break the team."
Montreat’s inspired team beat
Mars Hill College freshmen 95-70.
'The team began playing as a unit.jj,g
instead of as individuals. Early
in the first half Montreat trailed
Mars Hill by as much as six points.
With four minutes left before the
buzzer. Montreat pulled ahead to
stay, on a twenty-five foot jumper
by Roosevelt Robinson. On the
next play, Ben Young stole the
ball and passed up court to
Curtis Brooks whose lay-up gave
the Cavaliers a four-point edge.
When the buzzer sounded. Montreat
held a slim 39-34 lead.
Montreat started fast the
second half, reeling off six
straight points. A Cavalier man-to-
man defense resulted in sticky key
steals by Ben Young, Curtis Brooks,
and Roosevelt Robinson. With ten
minutes remaining. Montreat’s lead
was only ten points. Four straight
Cavalier baskets and a lion cold
created an eighteen point bulge.
Montreat reserves continued the torrid
pace in the closing minutes. Final
score: Montreat 95--Mars Hill 70.
