In the days when the Vietnam war raised the hottest, it was not unusual for Calvin Thielman to receive a call from the White House, with a message that the President would like for him to come to Washington as his guest. f ew people knew of the visits man made, when he would be a guest in the White House, quietly standing by until the President asked him to join him. Thielman feels that Johnson Invited him to the White House at first because "I was just an en couragement to him, he felt com fortable In my presence and he knew he could trust me." Graham was responsible for the union of the two Texans, Thielman said. The Montreat minister was Graham's guest at the prayer breakfast in Washington when the evangelist told President Johnson that Thielman was there. An invitation to visit the White House followed that day, and as the friendship was renewed Thielman visited the White House as an overnight guest on five or six occasions and numerous times when he stayed elsewhere in the Capital during his visits at Johnson's Invitations.
