Students Honor Foculty
The Student Government As
sociation sponsored a Teacher
Appreciation Day Tuesday, March
20, Each teacher was given a
name tag to wear all day, and
students wore colorful tags to
classes which said "We Appreci
ate You". The day was climaxed
by a steak dinner In Assembly
Inn for all Montreat-Anderson
College administration, faculty,
and students. "The General As
sembly" performed during the
dinner. The birthdays of Silas
Vaughn, President of the college,
and Elizabeth Wilson, faculty
member and housemother, were re
cognized. Letters of apprecia
tion were given to each member
of the MAC faculty and a spe
cial charm was given to both
Florence Reed, housemother for
McGregor Hall, and Elizabeth
Wilson, housemother for Mon
treat-Anderson Hall; both women
are retiring this year after a
total of 32 years of service.
Dr. John Newton was given the
first annual Faculty Award,
which Includes a trip to St. An
drews University In Scotland for
three weeks this summer.
COLLEGE OF THE MONTH
Montreat-Anderson College n(as
presented as the "College of the
Month" in the display windows of
the Teachers Insurance and Ann
uity Association Headquarters In
Hew York City. The display vjos on
exhibit dur 1 ng. February.
Malachi, a Christian-folk group, performed recently at Montreat.

Business Manager Resigns
Mr. William L. Schwantes,
Business Manager-Treasurer of
the Mountain Retreat Association
and Montreat-Anderson College,
has resigned his position effective
April 1, 1973. He has accepted a
position as President of Maple
Leaf Enterprises in Charlotte,
North Carolina. Maple Leaf is
a holding company owned by Dr.
E. Reed Gaskin. Mr. Schwantes’
responsibilities as chief executive
officer of Maple Leaf will include
general overseeing of the company
as well as the management of The
Carriage, a women’s apparel
store.
In a statement issued today by
Montreat’s President, Silas M.
Vaughn, he said, “While I have
only worked with Bill Schwantes
for six months of the four years he
has been Business Manager-
Treasurer at Montreat, I have been
impressed with his commitment to
the programs here and his tireless
energy in performing his many
tasks and responsibilities. I con
gratulate him and extend to him
my very best wishes and Godspeed
m his new position”.
Montreat’s Board Chairman,
James L. Morgan of Laurinburg,
N. C., expressed his sincere thanks
to Bill Schwantes for his fine work
and outstanding record for both
the Association and the College
and acknowledged the resignation
with regret, but with best wishes
to Mr. Schwantes.
