SPORTS SECTION The Cavaliers opened their season at home on the 16th of September by dropping a 8-0 decision to Brevard. The game was hard fought as the Cavaliers found themselves on the de fense most of the afternoon. Brevard had 56 shots on goal and the Cavaliers maintained 48 of those while only threatening a few times themselves. Goalie Keith Money was kept busy but was violently aided in a fine de fensive performance by the big fullback Don Blanton. The Cavaliers Tangle with Wal ters State on September 29 for Homecoming. The team was pleased with the fine support by both cheerleaders and MAC students as well ... so let’s kee-p on cheering the Cavaliers on. The Montreat-Anderson Caval iers are off and running for a new improved soccer team in 73-74. Coaches Morris, and Sufian Rayan are pleased with the teams togetherness and hard work. The players are inexperienced for the most part, but are learn ing more and getting better with every practice and scrimmage. Coach Rayan is handling the game planning and says he wants to play control ball passing ef fectively and using everyone in every position. Coaches and players alike have expressed good feelings toward each other. The team has no stars and will employ a plan of stragety more than skill. Coach Morris does look forward to good leadership from his returning so- phmores and is proud of the good team enthusiasm and hustle. Coach Morris was put on the spot when asked to comment on the Cavaliers record for the up coming season! 'We have eight games on the schedule and that is how many we are going to win”. Injuries plague the cavaliers with Brian Pillsbury and Woody Inscoe under doctors orders to sideline it for five weeks. This weakens the team on both of fense and defense and causes other players to double up on the work. We wish a safe and speedy recovery to both Pills bury and Inscoe, and hope all the Cavaliers stay healthy and play well. The fighting Cavaliers fell prey to Warren Wilson in a scrimmage on Sept. 8th at Warren Wilson, but the Owls outnumbered the Cavaliers 35-16 in manpower, that amounts to at least two teams against one but all in all the scrimmage provided to be a good learning experience for the Cava liers. For the most part this was the first time some of the players have ever played College soccer. Coach Rayan was not satisfied with the performance but said he now better understand him. Plagued by injuries, but with enthusiasm abounding and a growing love for the game, the Cavaliers closed out their pre season by dropping a 6-0 match to LJNC-A. Coach Rayan reminds us that the Cavaliers will not have to face these teams during the season. The competition will be tough, the schedule gruelling and the team will need our sup port so . . . “Let's go Cavaliers!” THE PLACE — BLACK MOUN TAIN RECREATION FIELD Where the Cavaliers of Mon treat-Anderson faced Waiters State Community College. For their third game of the season which just happened to be their homecoming. The scoreing was limited as the Cavaliers took a quick 2-0 lead at halftime. The Cavaliers goals were contributed to sopho mores Bruce Banberry on an in direct kick and Phil Thrift poked on in after a corner kick set up gave the Cavaliers the offensive edge in front of the Walters State goal. Otherwise the first half was “nip and tuck” as the ball was all over the field in a good agres- sive game by both teams. Now we’re into the second half, and it is hilighted with two goals by Walters State. The score is now 2-2 as the clock ticks away. The Cavaliers move quickly trying, trying, trying, to get just one more goal to win the game. But it was not to be, as the game ended on a 2-2 tie!
