Leadership Conference planned
The SGA of Montreat-
Anderson College recently
approved plans for a Student
Leadership Conference to be
held here at Montreat-
Anderson College during
March of 1976.
The conference committee
headed by R. B. Wilkins has
made the following tentative
plans: The guests will stay in
Assembly Inn and all
meetings will be held there.
Invitations will be extended to
student leaders at Junior
Colleges in the Southeast and
at some 4-year private
schools.
Dr. Jack Fleer, Chairman of
the Political Science
Department at Wake Forest
University, will be the con
sultant and perhaps a speaker
at the conference.
Sen. Mark Hatfield from
Oregon, evangelist Billy
Graham, N. C. Governor
College have also been
mentioned as possible
speakers and will be con
tacted.
The purpose of this con
ference is to bring together
student leaders from all over
the Southeast to share ideas,
voice concerns arid hear

prominent people speak on
issues that concern student
leaders. The conference will
also be in accord with the U. S.
Bicentennial.
The biggest problem facing
the Conference at the
moment was brought up up in
a recent SGA meeting.
“Where are we gonna get the
money?” someone asked.
The cost of the Conference
will be about $65 per person.
This will cover most expenses.
With the persission of the
college, the Conference
Committee plans to solicit
additional funds from cor
porations in and around the
Southeast.

This is the reaction of lots of
students when confronted with
the proposal of celebrating the
evening of October 31 in a
different way.
This proposal has been
made by Ann Wilson, assistant
dorm resident of MA-Hall.
The plan is based on what
“Hallowed Evening” was
originally meant to be.
“I got the idea a few years
ago from a newspaper article
that explained the origin of
Halloween,” she explains. “It
started in the early Christian
church when people wanted to
set aside one day a year to
“Slowly through the years it
was modified. By 800 AD it
was set for November One and
called “All Saints Day*. The
by RUTH AKERMAN
memorial was spread among
the people and soon the night
before took on special
significance as ‘Hallowed
Evening’ or Holy Evening!
“With the idea of dead
people, many folks turned the
evening into a time for fire
festivals and communicating
with spirits who had passed
on. This is the derivative of
what we now call Halloween,
when everyone dresses up like
ghosts and witches.”
This year’s “Holy
Evening” will take on a
marked change in Montreat as
Calvin Thielman is putting
together a special worship
service for the evening of
don‘t wanta worship the
dead,” Ann says. “But that’s
not the idea. The evening will
be a time of celebration and
thanksgiving tor these people
who have died. It’ll be a
prayer time for present day
martyrs too.”
What about the traditional
masquerade party in
McGregor dorm? There will
be a party in McGregor-after
the worship service but it will
be different. According to
some of its planners, it will be
something “special”.
“More people have com
plained about this than I ex
pected,” Ann says. “En
thusiasm usually comes after
some thought about it though.
“This is an observance
Christians have allowed Satan
to penetrate.” It’s about time
made for a “real”
masquerade ball later in the
year. Details on this will be
revealed later.

Soccer at MAC has thus far
given no indication as to the
quality of our team. Wehaved
played and lost five games.
The first was against a
tough King College Sept 13. At
this point Kings (being a 4
year school) had much more
needed experience.
Although we lost 4-2 we still
played winners’ ball. Moi
Monroe scored a long comer
kick straight into the goal.
Charles Libsome scored the
other point. The offense and
defense did and' outstanding
job both ways.
The next game on Sept. 24
was against a strong, very
rugged, Brevard Team.
was the first home game of the
season. Unforunately we still
came up short, 9-3. The of
fense couldn’t quite get
moving but the defense did a
excellant job. We appeared as
a team rusty on basic skills.
The third game was against
Warren Wilson College on
Sept. 29, which has a strong
recruting program. We lost 4-
. 0. This again was no in
dication of how we played.
The offense couldn’t quite put
it in. Fortunately the defense
played an outstanding game.
The next game was against
the same team and this time
by GARY SMITH
SPORTS EDITOR
we got a goal at last. It was
scored by Tim Bateman with
an assist by Beraie O’Sheilds.
Both offense and defe^e did a
good job. We in this game
were at last beginning to show
a offensive punch.
r
The fifth game against
Brevard on Oct. 11 at Brevard.
The score was 3-4 Brevard.
Brevard scored the winning
goal in the final seconds of the
game. We played probably
our best game. We have
homecoming this weekend
and have an excellant chance
of winning our first game.
