Page 6 September, 1977 Celebrity Among Us Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? REBOP was looking for a teenage girl from the Appalachian Moun tains with a positive outlook on her mountain heritage, and they found hejr DebbiejJean Rose, a freshman here at MAC. What is REBOP? REBOP,is about kids.. . for kids! It’ s about children from every country, from the California desert to the Louisianna Bayou, from Hawaii to Alaska, from Puerto Rico to the Southwest. It’s about language, their families and their achievements. And its a chance for kids from all over the country to share the various joys of just “growin’up! Each film segment tells about a different kid, from a different place, with a different look on life. Yes folks, Debbie is just a big kid! Actually this particular' segment op Debbie is geared toward teenage America, and will compare and contras t her life here at MAC to her life at home. When asked how she felt when she had been selected out of all the other girls considered (hundreds), Debbie exclaimed, “How would you expect to feel if someone calls you out of the clear blue sky and asks you to be on television? I laughed! Really, I feel lucky. I prayed a lot about it, and I’ m sure now that this is God’s will, and His way to help open some doors for me.’ She will receive $150 for her participation. Filming will take place on the MAC campus October 6. 'The ramainder of the story will be shot at Debbie’s home. REBOP, has been contracted by PBS and public airing is set for the fall of 1978. REBOP says that it will help to reinforce self respect for others-by allowing teens to share their differences and similarities through the common ground of television. REBOP’ s home is WGBH-Boston. DEBBIE JEAN ROSE by Richard Davis In the dark! Right? Right! Now that we’ve got that established, let’s get down to the nitty gritty! Ah yes, I remember it well! It was cold and rainy on that freahisn night. There wasn’t a soul in sight. As a matter of fact, when the lights went out, there wasn’t anything in sight! Everywhere the blanket of darkness swallowed Montreat with the mountains faintly siloubtted against the sky. It just so happened I was coming back from Ike’s after I had satisfied my late night munchies when I noticed that everywhere it was totally black except for the headlights on the car. As we drove past the girls dorms I really knew something was wrong since they were totally dark inside. Usually there would be twenty-five or thirty lights on with all kinds of girls hanging out their windows yelling as we went by. But there were none. Panick seized out minds as we blundered on toward Davis, our destination. As we rounded the corner, everwhere we were spotted with flashlights darting to and fro from onlookers peeping out of their windows. We parked the car and proceeded to walk to Steve Phillipi’s room, also known as the jungle, where we would wait and eat the remainder of our food. Upon opening the door we were blinded by a thousand flashlights and nearly stampeded seeing and smelling that we had food. After running and dodging funny looking people in shorts and T shirts, we stumbled into the room and shut the door, and found out that none of us had lights. So there we were tripping over each other trying to find the food and and for goodnss sake trying to find a seat. Well in came the mob and the caotic jungle got worse. Twenty minutes later not a speck of food insighltfand not a satisfied sweathog in the joint, someone got the bright (get it?) idea to visit the girls’dorm. I mean after all, this was the ideal time if ever there was one. Quickly confusion spread again as we ran into the rain in hot pursuit of each other (which we coidd not (see). To my own joy and liking (HA, HA) I was stampeded iggies on campus, Gasly Gary Richardson, in person, doing the jitterbug on top of me. After scraping myself up I s on down toward the low murmur of the crowd ahead. Upon finding them, I was also found by the Black Mountain Police who politely asked me what I was doing. “Would you believe a late evening stroll, officer?’ As the story goes we finally made it to the grand old doors of McGregor. Just as we were about to make our way in, the lights came on and for the third time that evening confusion struck like a ton of bricks. Startled as we were, we began screaming as we ran back to the dorm and said that if the light ever went off again that we would just go to bed! Sunday night, September fourth was the last night Ann Wilson would spend on the MAC campus for some time. Ann, former Dorm Resident of McGregor Hall, left the following day for (Jordon-ConweU Seminary. But would her friends let her leave just like that? NO! A party, the same night, was held in her honor in McGregor lobby. For Ann it was quite a surprise, because an hour before the party Rex Hoff man and several other male ab- ductees entered Ann’s home. After binding her in a blanket they proceeded to drive her around in a car murmurring such things as “I bet that water sure will be cold,’and “Do you think she can get out of the blanket that far underwater?’ Actually the only water Ann discovered was a damp McGregor as they unraveled her, and the tears shed following the party. We’ll miss you Ann. Sniff. Sniff. RAP— Records, Arts, and Publications by Ann Kirby 1) PABLO CRUISE-A PLACE IN THE SUN (A-fM) A newly discovered sound from a not so new group. Earthy, perhaps Island-type jazz with excellent instrumentals. Not the album for everyone, but- stongly endorsed for the music lover who appreciates sophisticated design in music. Contains hit single, “Whatcha (iionna Do’and should be noted for all the cuts which range from simple love songs (“Raging Fire’and “Atlanta June) to complex instrumentals such as “El Varano! 2) RITA COOLIDGE: ANYTIME, ANYWHERE (A-fM) Excellent album for everyone. The album title reflects accurately the versatality of the performer. From the hit single, “Higher and Higher’ to the Boz Scagg’s love song “We’re All Alone) Ms. Coolidgeprojectsher cool sense of emotions and her beautiful range of moods to achieve a nice feeling of sensitivity for all listeners. 3) THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: LIVING ON THE FAULT LINE (Warner Brothers) It seems that the Doobies are puulling out of the slump with this one. The hit single “Little Darlin’ hardly reflects the maturity of this group. Bordering on jazz, the Doobies easily put away with the title cut, not to mention the beautiful Michael McDonald’ s vocals on “You Belong To Mel 'This listener gives them an A for the day. 4) THE BROTHERS JOHNSON: RIGHT ON TIME (A-fM) Truly the best in entertainment for the soul lover! Soul never sounded sweeter than on songs such as “Free Yourself, Be Yourself’and “Never Leave You Lovely! Contains a song for all. Oh, by the way, “Strawberry Letter 23’ is on this one. 5) DAN FOGLEBERG: NETHERLANDS (Epic) The nice sounds of Dan Fogleberg are inside every song. Of the 11 songs, he (of course) wrote all of them. This is possibly better then SOUVENIRS. Mr. Fogleberg truly knows how to express the mind and the heart in such whity ways, and this is reflected ;ijn “False Facer’ and “Lessons Learned’. A very agreeable, satisfying session! COMING ATTRACTIONS: TOWNSEND BAND, LES DUDEK NEW....LINDA RONSTADT AND MORE S0UTH|BLUE HILLjME-The U. S.
