A HLGIHGI/l College Shocked Over The Loss Of Dean Evans Shocked, to say the least, was the reaction of Montreat-Anderson College upon hearing the news of Dean Evans’sudden death Saturday, October 29. Most students couldn’t accept the tragedy as reality as word of our loss circulated throughout the campus. Saturday just wasn’t Saturday any longer. Sunday Church services echoed the loss of Dean Evans, and classes were cancelled Monday in lieu of a special memorial service. The 54-year-old Weaverville native had joined the staff of Montreat-x-Anderson College in 1976 as a Bible instructor, later becoming a Trustee of the college and was appointed acting dean of the college in April 1977. MAC President Silas M. Vaughn described Dr. Evans as “a man who served God in many positions as a Christian ieader|* in Monday’s special memorial service. This quality was overwhelmingly evident to all associated with Dean Evans at MAC, and outside the college his strong Christian com mitment shown forth as well. Evans held an AB from Davidson College and an MDiv degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He had conducted additional study at Columbia Theological Seminary and was a lieutenant commander in FORMER ACTING DEAN, DR. HOYT EVANS the Naval Reserve during the Second World War. Active in the Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years. Dr. Evans was Secretary of the General Assembly Mission Board of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. and pastor of Brittains Cove Presbyterian Church in Weaverville, N.C. at the time of his death. Evans CBU Conference Due to popular demand CBU Christian Fellowship, Inc., will bring back three most interesting speakers for their November Conference in Anderson Auditorium the 17,18, and 19 of November. They are Bob Mumford, a dynamic speaker with a rare sense of humor; Charles Simpson, Bible teacher, minister and writer; and Jamie Buckingham, editor, author, and minister. All speakers will base their talks around the conference theme, “Principles for a Christ- Centered Life.’' Leading in music and worship are Jay Fesperman, teacher and seminar director; and Randy Malone, doctor and former missionary. Janet Clark returns as piano accompanist. r was former pastor at Westminister Presbyterian Church, Asheville, N.C., Hopewell Presbyterian Church, Huntersville, N.C., Union Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, N.C., and Franklin Presbyterian Church. Dr. Evans was moderator of presbyteries in Asheville, Kings Mountain, Mecklenburg, and the Synod of Appalachia. He was also a prolific writer of Presbyterian publications, authoring four books for Presbyterian youth and numerous programs for the Presbyterian Church, U.S. Dean Evans was many things to many people, but more than anything else, he was a friend. Because of the death of Dean Evans, Assistant Dean Miss Virginia Buchanan vyas asked to be the temporary Dean of Academic Affairs. A new Dean will be sought after between now and Interim week. Any suggestions for a new Dean should be submitted to President Vaughn’s secretary in writing. At present a petition is being circulated , to students proposing Dr. Parks. Curtis The Montreat-Anderson students went to the polls (conveniently located at Howerton Cafeteria) on November 8, the day before the national elections. After listening to the prepared campaign speeches in Convocation that morning, the students made their choices that afternoon. Joey Shore, Mike Owen, and Steve Foley ran for Freshman Class President and the student body elected Joey Shore. Joey had promised to keep an open ear for anyone who had complaints or suggestions for improving the school system. Jack Edwards and Don Redman ran for the male freshman Honor Council Representative, and the latter was chosen by the voters. The proceeding people were decided in the first poll: Tammy Edwards, Debbie Rose, Sue Sibley, and Carole Hoffman ran for the S.G.A. Freshman Representative slot for a female. Tammy Edwards won the run-off against Debbie Rose. Doug Kuhn beat Ken Lakin and Karl Peters for the male Freshman Representative to S.G.A. after a run off with Ken Lakin. The three competitors running for female Representative to Honor Council were Helen Dowling, Tricia Watson, and Arlene Burns. In the run-off, Tricia Watson defeated Helen Dowling.
