Davis First Floor clashes with Davis Third in Tuesday night’s Intramural basketball action. Cavaliers Defeated At Home By Mitchell r , 'i' li*’.-■■ ■ ' , Ss^, - i-v. >* by Allen Meadows The Cavaliers of Montreat- Anderson College matched the Mavericks of Mitchell College basket for basket in the second half of play but were never able to answer for the lO^oint defecit brought on by Mitchell during the first half. The 81-71 loss on February 6th marked the first time this season that the Cavaliers have dropped a game at home. Their record now stands at 9-4 with their next outing slated for February 8 at Asheville- Buncombe Tech. The Mavericks of Mitchell College led from beginning to end of the contest shooting a remarkable 70 percent from the field. Coach Norm Wilhelmi commented, “we only lost the game. We played just as hard as we have all season. We couldn’t play our game (zone) and so we had to force the action. Mitchell had tremendous shooting ac curacy.” Mitchpll is currently ranked No. 5 in regional defense, and also possesses a high scorer by the name of Walker. Walker, who had averaged 35 points coming into the contest, was held to only 16 by the MAC defense. However, another Mitchell player, Lemont Lindsey, answered with 32 points. Robert “Bull”Brinkley had a big night for the Cavs hitting 22 points and managed to keep MAC in the contest wiUi muscle rebounding un derneath. Willie McCray responded with 16 points and several ‘clutch’plays. Gary Parris had 10. The big surprise of the evening was James Fresh water’s production of only 9 points. Freshwater was in jured in the North Greenville game several weeks ago on the heel of his foot and is yet to be at 100 percent per formance. (Please see article on this page.) Kenny Roseboro and Alva Duke came off the bench in the second half to try and spark a MAC attack, but were only able to dent an otherwise high gloss Mitchell team. Duke connected for six points. Ivan Diggs rounded cut the scoring for the Cavaliers with 8 baskets. 1 Freshwater Injured Photo by Ken La Ida Tommy Siler sinks two points on a fastbreak for Davis 3rd Floor in Tuesday night’s action of In tramural Basketball. James Freshwater, guard for the Montreat-Anderson College basketball team and leading scorer in Western Carolina, suffered an injury in the Norto Greenville contest two weeks ago and has yet to recover. Freshwater went crashing into the wall on a fastbreak that night injuring his left heel. Although he played in Monday night’s action against Mitchell, his performance was far from usual as he only connected for a total of 9 points. Fans, players, and the coach considers Freshwater to be the core of the MAC attack. Freshwater says, “I’ m just following the doctor’s orders by staying off of it and soaking it as much as possible.’ ’ There’s not much time to recouperate for Fresh water considering the team could flounder without his presence. The injury would never have occured if the gymnasium wall behind the basketball goal had been padded suf ficiently. Coach Norm Wilhelmi stated solenuily, “our season has seen its hi^water mark.’’ It looks to be a battle from here on out for the Montreat- Anderson Cavaliers.
