G.A. Eager for God’s Plan
by Stuart Jones
It has happened atlast. The
years of darkness have ended.
Morning has broken, and a
new age has come upon us, for
now, at long last, the New
Howerton Hall is nearing
completion.
After years of debating,
which gave way to more years
of planning, negotiating, and
fund-raising, it was an
nounced last spring that
Howerton was to be fully
renovated during the summer.
The job, contracted by
Snoddy Construction, Inc.,
involv^ extensive redoing of
the dorm’s insides, including
a complete rewireing of the
old electrical system. Nearly
two-thirds of the plumbing,
system has been replaced,
including many new faucets,
sinks, toilets, and bathtubs.
A new ventilation system for
the bathrooms has also been
installed. The windows, all
new, are double-paned and
vaccuum sealed (for added
insulation). The hallways
have been carpeted, the
bathroom floors tUed, and all
rooms and halls painted.
Each room has new fur
niture including bunk beds
and new mattresses. All
ceilings have been lowered
18 inches and a new lighting
system has been installed,
■^e stairways are carpeted
and equipped with handrails.
Sever^ changes have been
made in order to update the
dorm to current fire code
regulations. These include a
door and stairway from 3rd
floor on the Gaither side of the
building and a 2nd exit door
from 1st floor on the same
side, firedoors on all rooms,
firedoors offsetting the stairs,
and hallways, a smoke
detector-alarm system. •
The lobby has new phone
booths, and an intercom
system; and a portion of it has
been sectioned off and in
corporated into the apartment
of Head Residents Jeff and
Kay Griffin.
Jeff says that he likes the
way the dorm looks, and he
hopes the resident men will
take enough pride in it to keep
it in good shape.
M-AC Business Manager,
Walter Hall, a major cog in
the wheels of the renovation,
estimates that students will be
able to move onto the just
completed 1st floor. In rooms '
that remain unoccupied,
workmen will be covering the
cement floors with tile. The
other rooms should be tUed
next summer.
Mr. Hall appreciates the
patience the residents have
shown regarding the ongoing
work, which is about 3 weeks
behind schedule. During the
first month, they had no
vending machines, no TV., no
water fountain, and no
telephones. Now, however,
things are coming together.
The Howerton Harlem is no
more, and “The Castle’ ’ will
now be regarded with the
respect it is due.

Since July of this year,
Francie Griffin has been an
iddition to the Montreat
acuity as Assistant Dean and
Housing Director. For those
that haven’t had the privilege
of meeting with her, she may
easily be taken for another
young woman student who
casually and optimistically
goes everyday to class.
Francie Griffin can be seen
any day about campus busUy
and energetically doing her
job. But though always so
efficient and “on the go,’ ’ she
stiU finds time to care for
others’ needs with her warm,
smiling, good humored and
loving personality.
Though her new position in
faculty is what most people
will know, Miss Griffin for at
Montreat College, that is not
all there is to her rather
amazing personality. Francie
Griffin’s interests and deep
commitment to Jesus Christ
have led her to a large
background with the unknown
in travel and missionary
work. Her most astounding
adventures on the mission
field began while she was at
Wheaton Graduate School
majoring in Cross-Cultural
ENIRGY.
We can't
afford to
waste it.
Communications.
During her graduate
itudies. Miss Griffin was
made aware of the in
ternational missionary grotq>,
“Operation Mobilization’ ’ and
eeling led by God became a
missionary for two years. And
it was those two years of
missionary work that led
Francie Griffin to almost
every comer of earth to take
the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
India (1% years), Malasia,
Japan, China, Southeast Asia,
Korea, and Indonesia are
among some of the places and
die things that she has seen
that most people can never
dream of seeing. The ex
periences held by Ms. Griffin
are powerful and strong
enough to fill books and
tomes.
Yet, more important than
all the spectacular things done
in Francie Griffin’s life, is her
quality of spirit. She’ s an
individual of great depth and
understanding for people. She
stops at nothing to give it all.
Montreat College can feel
very honored and blessed by
having attained someone as
Francie Griffin on faculty.
She is a person we will all
cherish and never hoep to be
rid of for any reason.
