Page EDITORIALS In Other Words,., WoII you know the situation, it began about 27 days ago in Teheran. Iran. Since then, knowledge and concern for the ho.shigcs held at the American Embassy in Iran has united Americans in a way raftly seen in the 20th century. So. what can we expect? What possibilities are there? Military foive? Out of the question— it is conceded on both sides that if an\ attempt was made to free the hostages by force, America would never see the members of the Embassy again. So what do > 011 do? Khomeni has already said that giving the shah to another countiy or asking him to leave America would be worse than not giving him back at all. Well? Ma>- I propose the least popular of alternatives. Give the shah back to Iran. i'hc shah should not be in America. He is a terrible man. When h.' firat came to powr in Iran he adopted a policy of westernization. The Iranians did not want it. So they disliked the shah, many attempts were made to assasinate hinx So the shah surounded hunself with force. Torture was common. Countless Iranians were killed because they opposed the shah. This is not heresay, this is documented. When the shah left Iran after the revolution in 197 he took a lot of money with him. He estimated to be worth between $2 and $20 billion. Where is the killer? He’s being protected by America while she risks the precious lives of 49 of her foreign employees. You say America is being blackmailed? She wouldn’t be if she sent the shah back. She would be standing for truth and justice. What would happen to the shah when he got there is the business of the Iranians. The> have ‘promised him a trial. He ruled the country, he broke that countiy’s laws so why shouldn’t he stand trial in that country? Is that wrong? Finally, if the shah is so worthy of America ’s protection why hasn’t he volunteered to return to Iran in exchange for the 49 prisoners? Does he consider his life worth more than 49 American lives, but then, why shouldn’t he, he obviously has the American government’s backing. Granted, the Ayatollah Khomeini is, in the words of Anwar Sadat, “a lunatic.” What he has done is despicable. But is upholding: America’s honor worth all those lives? You decide. ‘ —Joe DeVries by Sarah Howell What do you think America’ s stand should be concerning the Iranian conflict? “I think President Carter was neglecting the aspects of Christianity when he an nounced that :the Iranian students were to be deported. We are lucky to be free and we should share our freedom with them. This is not our land, it’s God’s land and his people should be able to live where they please. I do not think we should give the Shah back. I think there are other means of getting our people back which would not risk the Shah’s life. — Paula Neely, sophomore. “I think that we should not negotiate with the Iranians until they release the hostages. If they kill the hostages, we should retaliate either militarily or economically.’ ? ^ Charlie Jamison, freshman. “I think we should use any force necessary to get our people out of there. Right now I am happy with the way the Americans are handling it.’ ’ — Suzanne ’ Addison, sophomore. “I think that America should deal with it patiently and not judge too quickly. Because the Iranians feel they are doing the right thing, we ought to listen to them and try to work something out bet ween the two countries.’ ’ — Rita Stanley, freshman. “I think that we should try negotiating with Iran about the hostages, and if no other non-military solution can be found, we should give up the Shah. I also think we should lessen our involvement with Iran as much as possible, and if the embassy remains, we should definitely increase its security. Furthermore, I think we should quit making ourselves the best friends of dictators and tyrants.’ ’ — Tricia Pope, freshman. “I think that the lives of the American citizens in Iran are worth more than the life of one Iranian shah.’ ’ — Leta Parks, sophomore. “The Americans should get rid of all the Iranian students in the United States who support the Ayatollah Khomeini. Tthirik that all food supplies should be stopped to Iran because much of the food over there consists of American products and when the leaders begin to realize that their people are suffering without the Ainerican food then maybe they will stop it. I think the United States could be a bit more forceful, but the Americans are too educated and civilized to turn against the Iranians so forcefqlly as to cause a war for example. Because of this I feel the Iranians are taking advantage of us. They know the United States is not an aggressive country. I spent my junior and senior years in high school in Iran and graduated in 1977. My parents lived there until the Revolution started. I don’ t think the United States should give in to the Iranians by sending the Shah back. I know there are Americans over there, but I don’t think the Iranians have enough courage to hurt them. The Shah is dying. I know that he did alot of wrong and I realize that he made many mistakes, but I think he should be allowed to die in peace. No other country would take the Shah, so he is stuck here.’ ’ — Christina Caluori, sophomore. “It should be forceful. I think a show of force would actually be the best situation if necessary. Something has to be done, we can’t just wait on them.’ ’ — John Paul Perry, sophomore. “We are being blackmailed by the Iranians because they want the Shah back. If we can win over the blackmail without giving back the Shah then we are doing very good. I fell the United States should take the initiative and not give back the Shah.’ ’ — Laura Cadenhead, sophomore. “I think that the United States should be very forceful. We should not let the Iranians get the best of us. I think that the lives of the people of the United States are more im portant than the life of one Shah who does not belong to our country and I believe that their government should take control of finding him themselves and not involve other countries. However, because the United States is involved we must take a definite stand and act to get the hostages back.’ ’ — Dopna Ruth Osborne, sophomore. ; “The Iranians should authorize the Mexican authorities to arrest the Shah and hold him until they Can come and get him. I think they should let the hostages go.’ ’ — Edie Best, sophomore: : “I think we should bomb Iran with tear gas and !run down and get the hostages and bring them back on helicop ters and airplanes.’ ’ — Stephanie Ryan, freshman. The Klan- ire *r- S'- ■ s**‘ ^2 “This could be you.' ’ The steps leading from Davis Hall to Gaither are in sad disrepair. (C. Carter; photo) , Calls Christians to by Stewart VanDine The organization started in the nineteenth century with six col lege kids wanting to start a club for their pranks reigned. The Klansmen marched silently in parades before a fearful and awe stricken crowd trembling quietly because of the hooded figures. In a public school in Florida, a girl went to her father about a black guy who made a pass at her. The next day, several middle-aged members of the klan went in with cjubs and axes and beat five people. All of these people went to the hos pital, got treated, and left for home the same day — all, that is, except the pregnant negro girl. Meanwhile,^ police v/ere escorting frightened students to his-her bus. At present, out of fear, the black community has united. They’re ready to fight back in case of more trouble. Saturday, the 5th of November, in Greerisboro, there was an anti-klan march. Twelve men riding n a van and a car came by shouting and cursing at the marchers. Violence broke out as j^thc twelve came out with pis tols, shotguns, and clubs. Ele ven were wounded and foiir died. One guy got his head blown off 40 feet from his body: Klan versus black and coiii- munist, the newest of the enen> ies of fear. Again, both th? negroes and the other members of the anti-klan party are gath ered and prepared for more trouble. The robes ana noods in their circle go afraid of “niggers”, jews, and foreigners — afraid they will take over in the comm unity and the business world — afraid that whites might have to step down from their “First Positions”— from their control seats. Hate reigns. In turn, out of fear, those being antagonized wage war. Clubs...guns...ex- plosives... bloodshed.. .wives without their husbands and chil dren without their daddies — raised in hate, anger, fear, and inferiority. Is Kick Christian? So many of us have our concept of “Chris tian”. “This is Christian,” we say. I wonder what Jesus calls it. Those niggers, they worship wrong. The Klan has been VJE Work fok you known to say that His blodd is “Too sacred to mix with thkt of another and inferior race. ’ ’! God made the color, but color, cieed, styles, and haircuts ' don ’t make us Gods. Would Jesus be a member of the Invisible Empire? The men beneath the burning midnight crosses, sow fear and hate, thus reaping fear and hate. Lord, I can’t love as much as you can But help me, Jesus, ’ To love Indians, whites, and blacks And those who drink from paper sacks; No matter if they Smoke Or toke Or tell a few dirty jokes Help me to love them as they are ' Help me to reach out ’till they sing and shout Glory to you Help me to love them i Just like you love them Make me perfect. Because I’m not. Amen! by Jill Roberts Praying should be a natural habit in our lives. We should consider praying just like eating to feed our physical bodies and prayer to feed our spiritual bodies. When we pray we shoudd consider it a privelege. We are coming to the throne of grace with boldness to our Lord Jesus Christ seated at the right hand of God. When we pray we should go to God with all our cares, desieres, hurts, needs for a definite answer. Don’t quit'praying until you get your answers. God will answer in His timing and God is never too late or too early. God is always on time. Matthew 6:300 “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’ ’ (KJV) When God’s children come to him in prayer, we should come as little children. Matthew 18:4 “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greates in " the kingdom of heaven.’’ (KJV) When we pray we get to know our Lord Jesus as our Heavenly Father. ‘ When you pray just be open and let go because God knows what we are going to say before we say it. Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.’ ’ (KJV) God cares about everything in your life! Matthew 21:22 “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.’ ’ .(KJV) , i Praise Jesus. ! ItWi'i' ' n/irM \-CoLD,MN'isr>
