Athletics Page 8 CAVALIERS The hours of hard uork are finally paying off for the Cavalier Soccer team. The first half of the season proved to be a learning experience for the newer players. The team’s first match was against King College, a four year school with a much more advanced program. In the King game, we had three starting defenders who had never played in a soccer game. Most of the mistakes made were only due to their' newness to the game, no carelessness. This only proves that sometimes you have to learn the hard way. Although Montreal lost (1-1, with Carlos Villa scoring our only goal. Coach Fortosis says that his goal is for the team to get a little better every game. And they had their chance the next game when they went up against nationally ranked Brevard. Coach Fortosis comments on this, game. "All four of their goals were our mistakes, not because of their dominance. Our defense was incredibly improved. The second- half we completely shut them down and held them scoreless." The final score in the Brevard match was 4-0 Next the team traveled to USC- Spartanburg for their first away game and their first win. With an outstanding score of 9-1, the Cavaliers dominated due to their superior conditioning. Coach Fortosis was especially glad they won for the sophomores as it was a long time coming. The team was definitely gaining momentum as they headed into the toughest part of the season. The soccer team next faced Milligan and exercised superior skills as they dowTied their opponent 9-3. Carlos Villa set a new school record by scoring a total of 5 goals. Ried Estus and Randy Carriker each had one and David Barr hustled to add two to the winning score. The Cavaliers then went on a weekend road trip, where they faced Covenant and King Colleges in Tennessee. Carlos Villa opened scoring at Covenant and the teams tied before the half ended. Neither of the teams scored again, so the guys had their finst tie at 1-1. Travelling to King, the guys played a tough first half to lead 3-2 before the horn. Carlos Villa, Dirk Fullerton and Ried Estus each scored a goal. During the second half of play. King came back to win 7-3 over Montreal. The team then came home to face Piedmont Bible in a rainy and muddy match whid proved to be a victory for our outstan i 'k. The Cavalier soccer team strutted their stuff in front of a crowd full of. alumni and students as they put the Hendersonville Soccer Club in the dirt with 2-0 victory. Packing the sidelines were the stunned spectators, who viewed the tremendous talent shown by the team. The action packed game included a first half which saw incredible defensive play by both teams. Goalie, Mark Geddings, for Montreal, saved many shot attempts and Greg Lehman along with Trey Phillips, Charles Stevens and Bobby Gosnell saw that Hendersonville was held scoreless. The second-half proved to be the tur ning point for the offensive side of .Montreal’s game. The team took on an agressiveness which paid off with the first scoring in the game by Randy Carriker who was aided by Carlos Villa. The guys showed their stamina and skill as they manuvered their opponents around the field. Ried Estus, Charlie Jamison, Dirk Fullerton, David Barr and Robbie Marshall were all instrumental in play, as the team worked as a unit to beat Hendersonville. The final goal was jscored by Carlos Villa in an assist by Charlie Jamison: two sophomores who will long remember this win. And Coach Fortosis had much to say about his team’s Homecoming win. “I’m proud of the effort the guys put out. They were determined to make our fans proud of them. They have proven to me, the school, and the alumni that they are a tough and competitive college soccer team.” And their efforts were greatly ap preciated as they gave all those who participated in the Homecoming festivities, something to celebrate. The soccer team is now 4-3-1, and we wish them continued success in their future matches. . „ by Karen Oglesby PLACE MontrMt MontrMt Th«re Montreat There There Montreat Montreat Montreat There There Montreat There There Xtniebc CkrKlo* )ni UMXs BJu« & Gold TIME 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 3.00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 3:15 p.m. 2:00 p.m. Sriks« e • Photo by: Pete Mitchell f/^LL /
