Montreat Celebrates The Season by Karen Oglesby M-A Hall’s Christmas par ty last Sunday, was once again, a highlight of the year. As always, the girls hosted an enjoyable evening for all that attended the traditional party held in the lobby of the girl’s dorm. Open house began at 8:30 p.m. and lasted until 10:00 p.m., when the party began. The whole dorm was dress ed for the Christmas occa sion, and the joyous spirit of celebration was felt by all. The food and fellowship was great, as students and visitors “mingled” with each other, discussing Christmas plans, but more importantly the upcoming semester ex ams. In one corner of the lobby, Santa was obliging himself to a picture-taking frenzie. “Shots with Santa” were being offered at 75 cents, to allow students to remember their Christmas at Montreat-Anderson College. Earlier in the evening, the judging for the Christmas Dorm Decorations were held, and the winners were announced last Monday in Convocation. Davis Dorm won out over Howerton, with their many trees lighting the lobby, while McGregor Dorm won the girl’s competition, with Groseclose taking se cond place. As we near the departure time marking the end of the semester, we tend to reflect on what has gone by and the times we have had ,here at dear old Montreat. But we have a new semester ahead, and in a sense, a new begin ning. Enjoy the holiday season and everyone have a great break! We’ll see all of you, hopefully, back here in January, ready to begin new adventures, friendships, hardships, studies and classes. God Bless each and everyone — Have a Hap py New Year! Vol.11,No.3 December 11,1981 At the ripe oid age of 12, Larry Sitzes, from Kokomo, Indiana began a new rock & roli band, called “Sights and Sounds.” With a beginning like that it had to lead to a full time music career or the “banana factory.” Larry chose the music career. When he was 17, Larry had such a bad trip on “purple haze” that he had to sleep with the lights on for vveeks. One night during this time, he attended a revival in'his home church where he ac cepted the Lord as his Savior. This was the beginn ing of a brand new life. For the next five years, Larry played with different groups, including Sammy Hall and The Challengers, who was a backup group for Crystal Gayle, Susan Ray, Buddy Allen, Haggar Brothers, etc. After six years of traveling almost daily without Chris tian fellowship or grounding in the Word, Larry’s spiritual life began to grow stale, he realized he was becoming more and more involved in his music career and less in volved with Christ. • Realizing that- -if he was going to have a music ministry, he was going to have to have a good groun ding in the Word, with a strong fellowship. Larry returned home and submit ted himself to the elders in his home church and became involved. At that point, God began leading Larry to go on as a solo act. Now Larry and Susie, his wife, travel from their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, sharing the reality of Jes'us' Christ through musio to au diences of all sizes and ages. Sometimes Larry travels with his band, sometimes as a soloist, but either way his music is ex citing and his ministry,is ge nuine. Yes indeed, Larry Sitzes and his band give a super performance. On Saturday night, December 5th, he sang and shared some of his dreams and inspirations in Gaither Chapel. The concert got off to a roaring start with the band singing a song en titled “Good or Gospel Ship”, followed by a heart to heart talk about the commer Larry saia, ”We all need to get back to the real meaning of Christmas and stop get ting anxious and all caught up in the materialism of Christmas. We need to remember that God gave us the supreme gift in Jesus Christ, who was bom on Christmas Day.” Later in the concert, Larry sang a beautiful song called “Make Me An Instrument.” He said that the best music in a person comes when he yields his body as an instru ment to the Lord. The Master can make beautiful music in His children. Gaither Chapel became still as Larry sang the words to this song...“make me an in strument everyday I live...make me an instrument of your'love, Lord.” The concert consisted of various styles of music — one to speak to everyone’s heart. I think the last song carried with it the most in spirational meaning and most challenge to all of us. It was a song entitled, “I Sur render All to Jesus.” It is evi dent that Larry Sitzes and his band are dedicated to sur- StudentsTop Blood Drive Goal Larry Sitzes Performs in Gaither Chapei The Montreat-Anderson Blood Drive was a success. Our goal was 100 pints and the Red Cross collected 106. One hundred and twenty- four persons presented themselves, 18 were defer red and 38 were first time donors. Some students could not give because they had a cold or they were tak ing medication or they were underweight. The required weight enabling one to give is 110 pounds. The blood must be kept at 38° and taken to the blood bank in Asheville. The blood that is collected there will serve 26 counties. I asked some of the students how they felt about this donating of their blood. Donor Dave Moore said, “I hated giving, it was awful. But I’ll do it again.” Another donor, Donna Rhodes, com mented, “It hurt like crazy! Mama! Praise the Lord it’s over!” Virginia Fox, the head nurse, would like to en courage students to give again because people are always in need. You are re quired to wait 56 days or 8 weeks before giving blood again. If you want to give, the Red Cross Center is located at 100 Edgewood Road, in Asheville. The cafeteria even con tributed to the drive by giving donors a free piece of cheesecake at Monday night’s dinner. Chuck Perry, the coordinator of the pro ject, said he was pleased with the attendance and wanted to thank all of the students who participated. Virginia Fox left us with this comment, “Thanks to all the students. They were all well-behaved and cooperative.” Percy Col eman sums up this participa tion for us, “Praise the Lord! Give blood or save a soul, which is better? Do all for the Glory of God.” clalizatioh, .of,' Christmas. .. rendering all to Jesus.
