Page 3 Montreat Massacres Milligan by John Van Dyke The Cavalier’s soc cer season was kicked off to an exceilent start with a 3-0 win over Miliigan College last Saturday. The weather was perfect for a soc cer game. The clouds hung low over the mountains that are visi- bie from the new soc cer field. There was a cool breeze that refreshed the team dur ing the arduous strug gle. Although Milligan did not propose as much of a challenge as the team thought, it was a good work out for them, especialiy the defense. This was real- iy the first chance for the defense to work together against op position. They were the concentration of iast week’s practices in order to prepare for the game. The Cavaiiers were in control of the game during both halves, yet they were not able to put the ball in the back of the net as much as they wanted. Finaliy, towards the end of the first haif, Russ DeLong (right wing), one of the team’s captains, push ed the ball past the goal keeper as he fran tically fumbled for it through numerous pairs of kicking feet. The team was confi dent going into the se cond half, because everyone was in such good shape. After downing some water and receiving some quick words from the coach, they were refreshed and ready to go. In the second half, two more goals were scored for MAC. The first was a beautiful bicycle kick into the top ieft-hand corner of the goal made by Scott Farrington of Nassau, Bahamas. The second was made by an aiiing Scott Cox, of Miami, Fla. Scott’s goal was a simple shot to the right corner of the goal, but it was a beautiful shot. The team finished out the game with controi, finesse and, most im-. portantly, class! Coach Bryan Pillsbury was especial ly anticipating this game, because it was the first game to be played on the new athletic fieid. Pillsbury spent most of his time this summer getting the fieid in shape and is to be greatiy con gratulated. The field was said to have cost the schooi weli over $350,000.00. "Scott Farrington discovers just how painful an earring can be. ’ Sports For Everyone Intramurals...a big word to describe a great sports program for the entire student body! Do you reaiize that two-thirds of the Montreat-Anderson students wili par ticipate in at least one sport? According to Jake Wetzeii, director, fiag footl^all competi tion for guys and gais has just started, and the turnout is terrific. Jake is assisted by two work/study students who heip organize and officiate the games; coilectively, they are reaily encouraged by the good participation. Starting after fail break, intramural co-ed volleyball will begin. Incidently, folks, this is the biggest sport! After Christmas, basketball and floor hockey will be available for both guys and gals. With spring fever wili come soft- bail. The men and women will team up with other floors to stage sorne hearty competition. In most cases, intramural sports are played bet ween floors. Practice is not required, but some teams find it en joyable. Only a few students can play varsity athletics, but everybody can play in tramurals! Take Jake Wetzell’s advice. •'Don’t worry about how good you are. Just come and have a good time. it’s a great reiease of energy after being in ciass ail day long, so get involved. You’ll enjoy it, make some friends and feel better.” Lady Cavaliers in Action The Lady Cavaliers are a iiveiy bunch of freshman and sopho more girls who spike and set up for fun! Yes, the Lady Cavaliers compose the Montreat- Anderson inter collegiate volieybail team. The team con sists of 11 girls and one manager with Miss Anne Gant as coach. Captains have not yet been elected for the new season, but the two returning sopho mores, April Irving and Penzy Penzkofer, are fiiling the positions now. Miss Gant described the offense as ag gressive and hard hitting. The four for wards make some ex citing spikes and the two setters possess fine setting abiiities. The defense, however, needs a iittle work. Nevertheiess, she feeis the defense wili show up very well against their opponents. in their scrimmage against Mars Hiil iast Monday, the girls were composed and played well together. Indeed, the main focus of prac tices is teamwork. The Ladies wiil be hitting the Montreat Anderson court against King Coliege Thursday, September 16 at 6:00. The following evening at the same time the gals will be opposing North Greenville. Ac cording to Miss Gant, “a teem is as good as its supporters.
