Long Live the Nerd by Mindy Clinard Nerds are one of the most uni que groups known to man. They are rare human beings that usually can be pointed out in a crowd fairly easily. Nerds are often confused with othfer social groups such as rednecks and hillbillies, but they most definitely should be placed in their own category. Don’t get me wrong. Personally I have nothing against the poor' souls, but they never cease to amaze me. Nerds seem to care very little about their appearance in today’s world. They fit in better with the styles of thirty or forty years ago. Nerds always wear white socks. This is fine except they always wear dress shoes. It would not be so bad, but the white socks are always noticeable. I guess that they are just smart for wearing all of their pants too short, but I don’t think that we have enough floods to call for “highwaters.” Nerds like to be prepared. For example, most of them became ■Eagle Scouts by the age of 11. That is definately impressive. They usually carry from seven to ten dlf- ferent colors of pens and pencils, a ruler, a never used glass case, a Dick Tracy compass, and an economy sized bottle of nose spray in their shirt pocket. And the shirt, well If it is striped, their polyester wash and wear slacks will most fittingly be plaid of many non-matching colors of course. They usually add an extra wide tie when they “dress to im press.” Now, the tie can be either a solid color or multi-colored polka- dots. It all depends on whether or not they feel like a little excite ment. Nerds are really smart dressers. Every article of clothing looks so much alike that you never know if they are wearing the same shirt for four or six days in a row. You can always spot a nerd In the face because of the thick black plastic frame glasses and the pale complexion. They seem to always have sun only on their arms from the elbows down and right be tween the sock and the cuff of the pants. Nerds are not as dumb as they appear to be. Actually, most nerds are very Intelligent and have much more to contribute to society than their looks. Nerds have very little trouble in school. The work comes easily to them, and friends are always popping up around exam time. In fact, many students respect nerds and learn to live comfortably with them. All in all, nerds are great people. If it were not for people like them, we would have no variety in life. Hard Work Will Pay Off
