MONTREAT- ANDERSON
COLLEGE
January 31,1985
New Perspective To Eighteen
Thousand
. by Ed Baker
On December 26. 1984 twenty
Montreat students began their
voyage to Urbana Illinois for Inner-
Varsity’s “Urbana ’84”. The five,
day conference was held on the
campus of University of Illinois.
At the convention there were
two main conferences everyday
where such speakers as Eric Alex
ander, and of course, Montreat’s
own Billy Graham gave very in
spirational messages. We were
also divided into small prayer
groups that met twice a day to
study and pray about different pro
blems of the world. In between the
morning an evening conferences,
and the small prayer groups, there
were numerous seminars and
booths set up to inform on dif
ferent ideas and opportunities in
the mission field. These ranged
from subjects like Urban Missions,
Picking A Career in Missions,
Music in Missions, and to English
Literature in the Chinese
Classroom.
Scott Wiggins, from Florence,
SC had this to say about Urbana,
“Worshipping and learning with
eighteen thousand other students
was fantastic!” John Hinson, from
Lake Lure, NC said, “Urbana really
gave me more perspective on what
the Lord might have in mind for me
in the field of mission work.” One
thing that impressed David
Rasmussen, from Miami, FL was
meeting all those other Christians
from different states and countries
and knowing that he had
something in common with all of
them.
Urbana ’84 gave many people
new ideas for their possible place
in world missions. For those in
terested Inner-Varsity will be spon
soring Urbanav Onward later this
winter in Winston-Salem, NC.
Getting
Involved
by Bill Schieche
What did the Student Christian
Association accomplish last
semester? I was very impressed to
see just how much they did ac
complish. The SCA itself consists
of John Hinson, President; Daniel
Hardesty, Vice President; Jan
Davis, Secretary; and Carrie Chiu,
Treasurer. The SCA sponsors
many ministries both to students
on campus and to the community.
These ministries to the community
include The Presbyterian
Children’s Home where Montreat
students become “big brothers” or
“big sisters” to' young children
who come from broken homes.
Also, the Juvenile Evaluation
Center ministry allows Montreat
students to become friends to
juvenile delinquents from all dif
ferent backgrounds, and at the
Black Mountain Center for the han
dicapped Montreat students show
their love and concern for children
who have special problems. All
these ministries were successful
thanks to the SCA, the students in
volved, and the Lord for His love
and guidance.
The SCA had two major
ministries on campus last
semester, the advertisement and
support of Urbana 84, and the
Vespers services. The SCA was
successful in advertising Urbana
to all the students on campus, and
they also had the opportunity to
donate $500 to the scholarship
fund which helped many students
including myself to afford the cost
of attending Urbana 84. I can say
from my experience at Urbana that
the money was well spent. Also,
the Vespers services were a suc
cess last semester, they were a
ministry to many students. Many
times I was encouraged and
refreshed by the Vespers services.
“People were excited about com
ing” says John Hinson, SCA Presi
dent, this attitude helped to create
a warm atmosphere of Christian
fellowship which helped people to
open up more in Christian love.
Another aspect of Vespers was the
speakers such as the Junkins,
Tony Whalen, Tom Barker, Mr.
Daniel and others who SCA had for
the students to teach and en
courage them to be strong for the

The Staley Lecture Series will
begin on Sunday, February 17 and
continue through Wednesday,
February 20. The speaker will be
Dr. John N. Akers, Special Assis
tant to Dr. Billy Graham.
Dr. Akers will meet with the
S.C.A. on Sunday evening, the
17th; and a reception will follow.
Then he will speak each morning
at 10 a.m. Monday through
Wednesday; and Monday and
Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. There
will also be discussion periods in
the dorms following the evening
lectures.
Dr. Akers is a native of Colorado
Springs, Colorado. He and his
wife, Anne, have one son, Timothy.
Dr. Akers is a former Bible pro
fessor and Dean of Montreat-
Anderson College. He has a Ph.D.
degree from the University of Edin
burgh in Scotland, and a B.A.

orado. He received his Bachelor of

The Staley Distinguished
Scholar Series is a project of the
Thomas F. Staley Foundation of
New York. This lectureship was
established in 1969 by Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas F. Staley and Judge Mrs.
H. H. Haynes of Bristol, Ten
nessee.
The Thomas F. Staley Founda
tion sponsors speakers for the
Staley lectures on college and
university campuses throughout
the United States to communicate
the Christian Gospel to all
students. The public is also invited
to attend the Staley Lecture
Series.
Lord. Overall, the campus
ministries made a valuable con
tribution to the spiritual well-being
of the students.
The SCA was very pleased with
the outcome of last semester and
they are looking forward to an ex
citing second semester. Some of
their plans for this semester are to
start the Student Foreign Mission
Fellowship. This group’s purpose
is to inform students of the needs
of the world. Their goal is to en
courage students to use their
abilities any way they can,
wherever they can, whether it be
here on campus, in Chicago, or
overseas. Another plan fdr this
semester is .the showing of
