Volume 8, Number 5 MONTREAT- ANDERSON COLLEGE February 22,1985 Face The Truth by Mauricio Peres Many Columbians and most of the South Americans do not like Americans. The hatred for the USA among my people is increasing day by day. The fire is simmering and the blood is boiling. The fury is in the eyes and things are getting worse each day. The phrase “Yankee go home” is heard all over. An open exploitation and indiscriminate policy of colonialism reviv ed a feeling of rebellion that is attempting to kick out the imperialist American way. In 1977 a USA company sold a large volume of pajamas in South America that produced cancer. They were forbidden to be sold in the states. In spite of this the pajamas were sold in other countries. No one complained or went against the company. I guess the company thought that we are just a bunch of Indians without any importance. Few people knew about this incident except for the children who con tracted leukemia from the pajamas. The same thing happened with the ketchup years ago when another company sold to us pounds of ar tificial tomatoes. These chemicals contain substances forbidden by American laws because they are highly dangerous for human health. Honestly I do not think this is fair. I do not believe some dollars can be more important than human life. Two months ago (you can look in the last monthly issues of Time or Newsweek) an American company called Union-Carboride poisoned thousands of people in India and caused injuries to many others. How can a country that since the beginning has believed in human rights do stuff like that? Outstanding examples of great men like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and the founding forefathers show us that this country believes in human beings, in God, and in the equal rights that any of us should have. This is why I do not understand why all our economy belongs to the USA. The American monopolies control our market. We do not have free commercial enterprise because we owe huge amounts of money with extremely high interest rates. South American resources and minerals like carbon, retroleum, gold, and silver are extracted by the American companies. They just leave us with a small amount of the minerals or products because they have the technology and the income. Yes, you Americans help us a lot; you supply us with cars, machines, all kinds of technology, food, and medicines, but that help does not come without strings attached. The USA takes back a hundred percent of what it has given to us. There is no way we can develop our culture, and our country because we will always be under the power of the United States. Our teenagers live in an unreal world that looks like the American way. I mean the American world movies, magazines, clothes, and all kinds of propaganda have our youth completely dominated. It is also our fault because we ourselves do not know that we are killing our future. It is also sad to see how the USA and other countries cannot get along. We have so many things in common. We both do not want the communist to come over, but 1 guess that is what is going to happen because many see Russia as the only solution to our problems. Per sonally I fear this because we know what communism is all about. 1 love the USA because it has great things and great people living under the love of Christ. I encourage you to be more aware about our countries because your future depends on our future also. Please, brother North Americans be concerned about the world that surrounds you. Do not just let it pass away. Face the truth. Get to know it and take a critical position and at tempt to understand it better. It will help us a lot and it will help you too. For open and honest relations are always beneficial. SPRING BREAK! by Leslie Osborn One...two, One....two, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce....it’s that time of year again. The group was begun as a result of a burden on the hearts of some M-AC students to reach the many unreached peo ple of the world with the Good News and to help support existing missions. The objectives of the group are many and varied. The SFMF vi/ould like to promote short and long term missions for students now as a valuable learn ing tool as well as to help reach those deprived of the word of Jesus Christ. By uniting those who do have a burden for world mis sions the group can let people know of their oppoortunities with schools and mission fields are. Perhaps the greatest purpose for the group is aiding people around the world from Black Mountain to Asia. The most important means of aid or support is through prayer, however physical support (sending needed materials) and increasing peoples awareness of their sur roundings are vital too. Finally, the SFMF would like to urge all of those people who want to get in volved with helping those who hunger for God’s word, to get in volved NOW.
