The air was filled with electric
tension as the student body of
Montreat-Anderson filed into
convocation last November 25, 1986.
This was the day for student elections
and convocation was the place for
campaign speeches.
Running as representatives to SGA
were four freshmen: Oeland Camp,
Carol Fox, Andrew Lakln, and Michelle
Thomas. Our new representatives are
Oeland Camp and Andrew Lakln. Our new
representatives to Honor Council were
to be chosen from Rob Garrison, John
Smith, Sherry Kocsis, and BeckI Smith.
The "honorable" ones in this election
were John Smith and Sherry Kocsis.
On the Junior class presidential
ballot were Mindy Cllnard and Nan
Weltzel. The first junior class
president Is Mindy Cllnard. Probably
the most heated election was between
the freshmen presidential candidates
Jeff Kuhn, Susan Wright, Knox Bridges,
and Cathy Yu. The voting ran so close
that there was a run-off required for
Jeff and Knox. The new freshmen class
president Is Jeff Kuhn.
All of these people campaigned
before the elections by posting posters
and spreading by word of mouth to vote
and chose the right one. Well how could
there
have been a wrong one? All the
candidates were worthy of the title .
and would have certainly put forth
all the effort needed to do their job
right. All of these fine students
deserve congratulations for a job well
done.

THE SGA OPEN FORUM
by Mindy Cllnard
"The purpose of this forum is to
start something." And start something
it did. On February 4, the SGA (Student
Government Association) held its first
Open Forum to hear and review
comments, compaints, and suggestions
from the student body.
SGA President Liz Martin presided
over the meeting and openly
commented, "We want to hear you. We
want you to get Involved. We (the SGA)
are here for you." The SGA Executive
Committee, Mrs. Andrews, and Dean
McDowell were also present to address
certain areas of concern.
There were a good number of
students at the third floor Belk Center
meeting to hear exactly what was being
done to meet their needs and concerns
and to raise questions dealing with
campus life. The agenda was compiled
from suggestions found In the SGA
suggestion box, located In the Snack
Bar.
Issues such as the M-AC voting
process, lower tuition, student
involvement in SGA, the present curfew
policy, the status of a Jr/Sr dorm. Open
Dorm rules, and a food account which
could be used In the Snack Bar as well
as In the cafeteria were discussed.
All Issues raised from the agenda or
from the flooor were given equal time
and an answer by someone
knowledgeable In the area. For those
questions that can not be decided by the
SGA or that require further discussion,
the correct channels to pursue were
given to the student inquiring for a
definite answer.
One Issue of particular interest
dealt with the food accounts. It was
asked why the students are unable to
apply their account to the Belk Center
Snack Bar as they are In the Howerton
Cafeteria or why only one set meal plan
Is available to the students.
According to the findings of our
trusty Mrs. A, we do not have a large
enough number of students to merit two
separate meal plans. If we were a
large school, we could handle such a
request. With the current meal plan,
the food, the staff, the maintenance,
etc. Is paid. The Snack Bar however Is
not equipped to handle the amount of
students that would possibly be eating
there at meal time. It would be more
costly to be prepared in both the Snack
Bar and the cafeteria to handle the
meal time crowds.
Any other concerns dealing with the
cafeteria may be directed to our

On February 28, 1987, the
Fairvlew Amateur Theatrical Society
will present the play the Pirates of
Penzance in Gaither Chapel. This
musical comedy by Gilbert and Sullivan
will be held at 7:30 and Is free
admission for everyone.
This will be the third play produced
by the society. Their 1986 performance
of "Fiddler on the Rood" was a huge
success with a packed audience at the
performance.
Moira Blair, the director of the
Fairvlew Amateur Theatrical Society,
takes time off from her work schedule
in her hometown of London, England to
direct these plays. This is their third
year organized as an amateur acting
society.- They work together as an
informal, fun-loving group to discover
each others talents and to entertain.
Sophomore Class President Melanie
Blocker, who Is the student
representative to cafeteria concerns.
She and Manager Jack Spencer are
always open to comments and
suggestions. Jack has even started
holding meetings for food service
suggestions to better serve the
students. The first meeting was held
on February 5th and resulted In such
Improvements as the cold line of
sandwiches during lunch and dinner.
Everyone Is Invited to attend these
meetings In the cafeteria private dining
room.
If you have any other concerns, or If
you are Interested in finding out what
has been done dealing with these,
please take It upon yourself to find the
answers. Every other week, the
Wednesday evening SGA meetings are
held In the second floor conference
room of the Belk Center.
You are encouraged to take part In
the school's SGA. If you are not
satisfied with the way things are
going, take action by coming to the
meetings or Open Forums and by
voicing your feelings rather than by
sitting around and wishing something
would get done. As President Liz once
said, "The SGA Is the voice of the
students." Why not let them prove it?
