The last time was probably a few years ago with Michael W. Smith and ’Project'’. Well Smitty will just have to move over and make room for Steven Curtis Chapman. Chapman's new release, "First Hand", is full of exciting and gutsy music. I would compare his style and vocal sound to that of Huey Lewis. Having written songs for Amy Grant, Sand! Patti, B.J. Thomas and many others, it’s no wonder that the quality of all of his songs is so Impressive. The excitement and energy never ceases from the very hot "Footloose" type tune, "First Hand", to the soft, gentle, yet convicting ballad, "Do They Know". My picks from this album are "First Hand", "Weak Days”, the first single released; "Hiding Place", a tremendous, comforting ballad; "Run Away", for all of you "Huey" fans; and "Dying To Live", a very lyrically strong song. But, any tune on here would make a great single. All in ail, Steven Curtis Chapman is causing some serious eye-brow lifting, and once you here the contemporary sounds of “First Hand", you’ll know why! (unlililed) BY Michael W. Smith This 130 page, untitled work of the present Goliath of Christian music has not yet been released to the public. It Is a book written by Smith to address the problems of today's youth. In it. Smith uses lyrics to some of his most current and popular songs, along with scripture to console, advise, and lift up our teenagers. In the preface, Smith explains that the basic theme of his latest project, "The Big Picture", is the young person and the battles he faces day to day with peer pressure, low self-esteem, instability, and other obstacles that can hinder a teenager's Christian walk. Therefore, Smith takes songs from "The Big Picture" and uses the lyrics, along with scripture to answer actual letters he has received from young people seeking comfort an advice. Although the book deals mainly with problems facing teenagers, great insights are given that may be helpful to people of all ages. Smith’s book is scheduled for release in late September and will be available at area Christian bookstores. I recommend this book to all teenagers and anyone who wants to get the "big picture" of what todays young people are facing. TO THrt KINGS ON THt iXKlH or mclJi NEW luuiy axiuL. C.S. LEWIS SOCIETY MEETS The Western North Carolina C.S. Lewis Society is a group of people interested in the writings of C.S. Lewis. For example, in Mere Christianity he says that each individual must honestly face the claims of Christ and not try to put Him off by saying that He was only I a great moral teacher and not the Son [ of God: "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher.
