THEALETHEIA VOLUME 11 NUMBER 3 MONTREAT-ANDERSON COLLEGE NOVEMBER 4, 1987 "THE BOYS CAME BACK!" Greg Howard From Sheridan, Arkansas comes one of the fastest rising Christian groups today. The Mid-South Boys have stormed across the states leaving their presence in the hearts of the young and the old from coast to coast. Maybe it‘s their genuine sincerity, or their special brand of music, or just their unforgettable personalities that leave people "spellbound" in every good sense of the word. The Mid-South Boys have recorded three LPs on the Morningstar label since their reorganization of the old Mid-South Boys Ouartet of the past. With new faces and a new sound, they have enjoyed numerous awards and recognition, had songs to reach the top 10 of the national charts, but most of all, they have seen people's lives changed for Jesus through their ministry. In 1986, the “Boys" were named “Newcomer of the Year" at the Singing News Fan Awards. Also last year, they received the "Horizon Award" at the 6MN Peoples Choice Awards. They've appeared at the Houston Astrodome, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, Reunion Arena In Dallas, Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, the Governor's Mansion in Little Rock. Arkansas, the Raddlson Hotel in Nashville, and Opryland. They've kicked off this year with a top 5 song. “That's My Child," and their new release, “City Lights," is on Its way to the top of the charts. Rave reviews of their new album have already been pouring in. 6MN (Gospel Music News) said, "These Guys pull out all the stops when It comes to great music." They also were nominated In several categories for the Fan Awards for 1987. Probably one factor In their popularity is their unique style of music. In secular terms, it is similar to the music of Alabama, Exile, or Sawyer Brown, It is a progressive country sound with a message of love, hope, and Jesus Christ. Junior Greg Crouch reflects on their concert at M-AC this past Saturday by saying, "I've never really liked country music, but 1 was so blown away by the Mid-South Boys talent and message that I enjoyed their concert more than any other." When I heard they were country I really wasn't interested in going to the concert because that's not really my kind of music," one student said, “but I'm so glad I did, because they were fantastic." The Mid-South Boys brought the house down in Gaither Saturday night. It was a time of great music, laughter, fun, worship, and prayer. People came away from the concert feeling spiritually uplifted and flying high. Montreat has become a special stop for the Mid-South Boys because they said they feel so at home here. In any case, it is definite that the Mid- South Boys and M-AC mix well! Mid-South Boys P.O. Box 576 Sheridan, AR 72150 (501) 942-4540 Harvest Festival a Success! Greg Howard The 1987 Harvest Festival has come and gone and the consensus is that it was a great success. Davis started off the festivities with a great masquerade dance -Friday night. Saturday was full of Fall fun with a carnival-like extravaganza. Each dorm, the faculty, the staff, clubs, and other M-AC organizations all had boothes which featured everything from International food to a dunking booth to a car bashing. The afternoon's activities were highlighted by an outdoor pig-pickin' for dinner. The night continued with trick or treating In the dorms for the community children and a tremendous concert with the Mid-South Boys. The weekend was closed out with the unexpected surprise of having Or, Billy Graham speak in Gaither on Sunday morning. It will be a weekend to be remembered fondly by all who participated, Junior Jimmy Smith said, "It was probably the best weekend I've had here since I've been a M-AC student!" All the work and help which was given to the Student Activities Committee Is greatly appreciated. MONEY MATTERS RAISING THE MINIMUM WAGE The Labor and Human Resources Committee has recently completed hearings on a bill to raise the minimum wage. Testimony has been heard from businesses, economists, trade associations, the academic community, and minimum wage workers themselves on this bill, which would increase the minimum wage from its present level of $3,35 and hour to $3.85 in 1988, $4.25 in 1989, and $4.65 In 1990. The legislation would also provide that In later years the level will be Indexed to 50 percent of the average hourly wage. The minimum wage has not been raised for six years, and during that time Its purchasing power has eroded by 27 percent. Opponents of the legislation argue that It will cost jobs, and cause bankruptcy and Inflation. But the bipartisan Minimum Wage Study Commission found in 1981 that past hikes in the minimum wage had no significant Impact on adult employment, youth unemployment. Inflation or the viability of business enterprises.
