I was worried that my short supply of money wouldn't be enough to buy my gas and lunch. I pulled into the Exxon station and began to gas up. I thought to myself, “ I wonder if seven dollars will be enough to get me home? Then I will have three dollars to buy my lunch.". The snow and freezing winds were turning my hands blue it was so cold. The pump had no rubber handle so the cold metal was like an ice cube. I paid the attendant and started for Wendy's. I pulled up to the red light and began to fidget with the radio. You can't ever find any good music when you're gonna be listening for a long period of time. Suddenly, someone on the side of'the road took my mind off my own selfish thoughts and brought tears to my eyes. There was a man, about thirty years of age, standing in front of Wendy's with a piece of cardboard In his hand. On It he had scribbled," I WILL WORK FOR FOOD.", He stood shivering in the cold with no gloves on and only a thin army jacket to shelld him from the cold and snow. A scruffy beard and mustache covered his pink face. I looked at him and his eyes seemed to be begging - not for him but for his starving family I could have kicked myself for being so selfish. All I was thinking about was whether or not l had enough money to go home on and eat. Here is a M-AC Golf Team Rips Course Reporter "Ace" Chipshot Amidst enthusiastic crowds and to the thundering applause, the Montreat- Anderson College Golf Team teed off the 1988 season. Cries of "I can't believe it", "I've never seen golf played like this","Golf will never be the same again", resounded from the awe-struck crowd as Brylan Gann, Brent Heykoop, Gary Greenly, and Scott Richardson shocked the cheering throngs with shots the likes of which have rarely been seen in the world of golf and, certainly never before in this part of the world. Even the ever-pleasant and understanding golf pro at the Black Mountain Golf Course, Mr. Wilburn Waters, was observed in the masses of fans fighting to be near the Montreat Golf Team. Mr. Waters was shaking his head in wonderment and exclaiming, " This Is amazingl I must have my glasses changedl". The eager crowds that closely followed our stalwart team were permitted to take pictures and even request autographs, but, after a hasty conference by team members. It was . decided that requests to kiss the team member's hands would not be permitted and the numerous gifts of large sums of money would be refused. It Again. Despite the adulation from the multitude of adoring fans - v/hich tills writer modestly believes were richly deserved - the team members persevered and had a great time. One team member, whom, rumor has it, has just rejected a "Rich and Famous" contract offer with the PGA, commented on how much he appreciated the Town of Black Mountain permitting MAC'S golf team to use this fine golf course for our practices and matches. Special kudos was especially made to Mr. David Donnelly, Black Mountain's Director of Parks and Recreation, and Mr, Waters, golf pro at the course. Future team practices ( which certainly will be of no help to this group it's hard to Improve on perfection ) will be held In secret. However, this reporter has learned, from a reliable source, that these sessions will occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m, at the Black Mountain Golf Course, MAC'S faculty advisor for golf. Dr, Jones, while Inviting more students to try out for the golf team, was last seen trying to regain his sanity by drinking a large Coke and was overheard muttering," The world may not be ready for golf of this caliber", He then tempered his outlook by cautioning onlookers that team members Knox Bridges, Scott Russo, Sam Wheeler, Debbie MIer, and Nick Mackowsk.l have yet to display their skills on the course. As the team members led a thoroughly shaken Dr. Jones back to MAC'S medical clinic he cautioned the ever-present mob of fans that these absent team members have golf shots that will be talked about for years to come. Rumors have It that future matches will permit only 30,000 fans per day so. If you plan to cheer for this amazing, ever astonishing team, be sure and get out there early!! man, in desperation, giving up his last bit of humility to feed his family. I stopped right there and asked the Lord to forgive me for being so selfish. I thanked him for everything he had given me and then I asked him to help that man. I believe in my heart that God had a "purpose In putting that man there at that particular moment. It was to show me how selfish I was. Every day I rush around trying to get everything done and I'm always complaining that things are all going wrong. I now realize how Important it Is to take time out to thank the Lord for all He does for me. When things go wrong, I should thank Him for the experience that will make me grow and when things go right, 1 should thank Him for giving me those blessings.
