By Susan Long Recent concerns in the Persian Gulf crisis have taken on a differ ent form as American Prisoners of War (P.OW's) cam,e via ed ited tape to the outside world through an Iraq broadcasting on Sunday, January 20. The fact that American soldiers are held captive by Saddam Hussein is frustrating enough to the U.S. gov ernment but what has proven more angering is Saddam's apparent breaking of the Geneva Convention. The Geneva Conven tion formed a series of international treaties concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, between 1864 and 1949, for the purpose of improving the effects of war on sol diers and civilians. One of several pacts to come out of this deliberation concerned the treatment of P.O.W.'s and was at the time signed by Iraq. In basic terms, the con tract says that prisoners must at all times be pro tected, particularly against acts of violence, intimidation and against insults. During the tele vision bradcast on Sun day, January 20, seven captured allied airmen were shown, three of which appeared to be Americans; J effrey Zaun, 28, Clifford Acree, 39, and Guy Hunter Jr., 46. Both Zaun and Hunter made statements which condemned U.S. and allied actions against Iraq. However, experts say that from the sound of their voices and through other seen clues, that the men were being forced to make these pre-written state ments. some of the pris oners appeared injured as well. Saddam has also threatened to place the prisoners at nearby bombing targets. Now outraged at ^ese possi- bilites, the reutterence of his October words are probabaly remembered in Presidents Bush's mind, "(Saddam is) Hitler revisited. Re member, when Hitler's war ended, there were the Nuremberg Trials." Many Americans per haps wonder if Saddam will be put through simi lar trials if or when the Allied forces conquer him. Other war progres sions ocurred when Tel Aviv, Israel was bombed Tuesday in the third air strike against the coun try. Approximately 70 people were wounded and three died with heart attacks as results of what is described as the worst of the three attacks. To date, Israel has not re sponded to the attack. Some believe that the no response was due to the U.S. withholding of "IFF" (Identification Friend or Foe) Codes, which indicates even more that the U.S. wishes for Israel to remain si lent for now. While on routine patrol of the Saudi- Kuwait border, a Saudi pilot engaged three Iraqi jets. Two of the jets, carrying bombs and Ex- ocet anti-ship missies, were distroyed while the third fired an Exocet and and escaped. Also, in recent news, Thursday, January 24, the U.S. Navy sank an Iraqi ship, capturing 51 Iraqi sail ors. Meanwhile, the cost of war has become a question on many American minds. As of recent, the war effort is costing approimately Please See 'War' Pg.8
