Changes in Work-Study
By: Susan Long
Staff Writer
Those Mon treat students
who will begin or plan to
continue in the work-study
program next academic
school year will be offered a
different twist in their jobs.
Beginning in the fall of the
'91-'92 academic year. Mon
treat will begin what could be
called a "tier system."
For students engaged in
the work-study program who
have previous experience or
the responsibility of a par
ticularly taxing job, earnings
could be increased. The Fi
nancial Aid Department has
put together a program which
could offer a raise for stu
dents who have been work
ing the same job in the work
program or for work-study
positions that require more
effort.
To determine a job's dif
ficulty level, a survey has been
sent out to all supervisors to
describe the tasks that the job
entails. According to these
reports, wages will be deter
mined. Sometime in April,
the Financial Aid Office will
send out notices to each
supervisor so that they might
request a specific student for
next year. If available this
student will be placed thus.
A final form will be sent out
to all students who partici
pate in work-study as part of
their Financial Aid Package.
Through these forms, the
students can express the de
sired area they may wish to
work in. A student's qualifi
cations are of course impor
tant in a decision and ^eir
desires are also given consid
eration.
The main point that the
Financial Aid Office wishes
to display, is that the work-
study program consists of
real jobs. The services the
students provide are valuable
to the area in which they
work. These students fill out
time sheets, tax exemption
forms, and receive real pay
checks. It is the choice of the
student as to whether this
money is applied to their
college tuition. Those who
choose to use it in this man
ner must still endorse the
check and turn it over to the
Business Office.
If you are interested in
becoming a par t of next year's
work-study program, go to
the Financial Aid Office and
inquire.
For those that are cur
rently in the work-study pro
gram, wages will change with
the upcoming increase in
minimum wage.
