EDITOR
OF
THE ALETHEIA
“It’s a new year! "
These words spring from
the mouths of adminis
trators, faculty and stu
dents of Montreat-An-
derson College with a
tone of hope. The Ale-
theia is not outside of
this group of hopeful
“Montreaters” in plan
ning and anticipating a
great new year. In the
past, The Aletheia has
had some difficulties,
but this year we hope to
iron out the problems
and lay a foundation for
a consistent quality
paper at Montreat.
Please have patience
with us!
TheAletheiais a stu
dent publication: it is a
way that students can
express their thoughts.
I encourage you to sub
mit articles on issues
that concern you. Each
issue of TheAletheiawHl
contain an editorial
section with editorials
on prevalent concerns;
both the pro and con on
the issue will be pre
sented. “Aletheia” is the
Greek word for truthful
ness; under that title
should come your ideas
and opinions along with
current news.
Welcome to Mon
treat! I hope that your
year has been positive
thus far and remains
good. We are blessed to
have Mr. Hurt and his
ideas and motivation in
our lives at Montreat-
Anderson College.
The Aletheia wants
to represent you. If you
have any suggestions for
the paper or wish to get
involved in the staff
please contact one of us.
Our goal is to produce a
paper that you will en
joy and benefit from.
This issue, for your en-
j05mient, we have pro
vided a removable page
containing schedules of
the games for several
sports, I hope you enjoy
it! I hope your year at M-
AC is pleasant and pro
ductive, and that The
Aletheia serves you well!
Our Purpose and
Editorial Policy
To mark the beginning of a
new year. The Aletheia wishes
to define the newsp^ier’s pur
pose and editorial policy for
its readership.
The Aletheia is an inde
pendent student newspaper. Its
function is twofold, to inform
the college community and to
train students interested in the
media. Any Montreat-Ander
son College student is eligible
to become a member of the
Aletheia staff.
As a student newspaper, its
news content is necessarily
concentrated on campus issues
and other matters of interest to
its readership. Although, The
Aletheia devotes space and at
tention to state, national and
international issues, it places
greater emphasis on the local
sphere - an area where it pos
ses greater expertise and in
fluence. Space limitations
require coverage to be limited
to that which is of most inter
est to the greater number of
persons.
One of the requirements of a
free press is public access to the
media. The Aletheia editorial
page prints forums and letters to
the editor written by readers.
Forums are designed for state
ments which, to be communi
cated effectively, require a siz
able amount of space; letters to
the editor are briefer statements.
The Aletheia seeks to report the
news as truthfully as possible.
The newspaper’s ethics code
contains safeguards intended to
eliminate some factors which
may threaten a reporter’s objec
tivity. Editorial views are in
tended for the opinions page and
are distinct and separate from
news coverage.
The Aletheia staff is dedicated
to maintaining a free, independ
ent, responsible student news
paper at Montreat-Anderson
College: and to strengthening the
newspaper and its reputation for
the future.
Students:
With all the new changes for The Aletheia,
the Aletheia staff is interested to know
what you think.
If you have any ideas or opinions
or would like to submit an
article or editorial, please do so.
We encourage all students at
Montreat-Anderson College to turn in
submissions to us.
Just do so by dropping the article
in the campus mail and put
your name and dorm.
Thank you and we look forward to
hearing from you.
