ALETHEIA Volume XXVI, Number 18 Montreat-Anderson College March 2, 1993 Facts of Love Comes to Anderson Auditorium Kim Boyce Concert to be opened by Keith Brown By Jennifer Gunsch On Friday, March 19 at 8 pm, Montreat-Anderson College will present Kim Boyce in Concert at the Anderson Auditorium Boyce will be preceded by singer and song writer Keith Brown. Boyce's music com bines pop, rock, and R&B, to develop her high energy music. Behind her music is the feeling of life lived, of joys and struggles overcome, of problems dealt Kim Boyce - Maturing as her audience matures with, and the feeling that with greater victory comes greater joy. Boyce's debut album. Facts of Love, was produced by Biyan Lenek, Michael W. Smith's Go West Young Judicial Review Connmittee Recommends Changes By Marsha Evans Man 's producer, and Brian Tankersky, who has produced Boyce since her debut in 1986. Boyce commented on her album by saying, "Every song on this al bum talks about a different facet of life, whether it's love of your mother, in "The Hurting People", love in a com mitted relation ship in "Let'sStay Together", or \ht kind of love in When Love Calls Your Name, that'll get you doing the things you normally wouldn't do - the Go ye ther^ore into the world andpreach the gospel type of love. Oneofthesuggestedchangescon- cemeddormcouncils. Insteadofhaving three separatedorm councils, represent ing each donn, the idea is to combine all three into one large Judicial Council. TheHonorCourtwillstillhavethesame duties, however, it will now be com posed of a smaller group of people. A new council will consist of "Appeals Judges",madeupofthreestudents,elected by the students. The whole idea behind the "Appeals Judges" is to give the stu dents achance to appeal There are two opportunitiesfor qjpeal; firstlhe students can go through the appeals court, and if still not satisfied with the outcome of the trial, they can request an appeal to the Administrative Council. Dr. Risher, Haney, and Pettit all agree that "the desire of this committee was to propose a judicial reforms packet that reflects the needs and ideals of the Montreat- Ander son College Community." Haney said, "We had an experi enced team putting this thing to gether, we were aware of the prob lems and possible solutions." Also Pettit remarked, "In my opinion, it does reflect the maturity and integrity of a senior level institution." Bell Tolls in Montreat for Alcohol Awareness Week By Shalimar Kinsey Montreat-Anderson college will be displaying a number of visual stimuli throughout the week of March l-5,to setoffAlcoholAwareness Week One day during the week, the school bell will be rung every thirty minutes. Each time the bell tolls, one alcohol-related death will have oc curred somewhae in America The red ribbons, displayed around campus, will be in support of "Don't Drink and Drive". Nurse Judy Keels and school counselor Dr. Carmen Copenhaver are asking each student to also wear the red lapel ribbons, available in the Cafete ria and Bookstore, as a sign of support This mornings convocation will host Vaughn Ownby, Executive Direc tor of the Buncombe DrugCommissioa song,TheHurtingPeople. She stated, "I started writing the lyrics to The Hurting People because I had gotten a letter from a little girl who was talking about how much she loved my music. But there was definitely an abusive situ ation in her family. I knew from the way she worded the letter that my music is kind of her escape from this situation. I wanted to be really careful and give her something that would give her some hope. That song is addressed to those of us outside those situations. It's both a plea and a challenge for us to help people in need. There are many songs on the album that talk directly to aperson in that situation.'' Boyce also stated that her main purpose insingingisbecause she wanted to go into the world and rejoice, she also said that if her music causes people to become strengthened in their faith or KĀ«ith Brown - Was writing songs at 13 even helps them to make a first time commitment, then she has done her job. Keith Brown, Guest star, is currently writing for BMG/New York and has a cata logue of over 250 songs. Brown writes songs with clients such as Anita Baker, Patti La Belle, Jodi Whatley, and George Michael. Brown's ten song debut album. This side of Heaven is a musi cal journal that gives his listeners an inside look at the person of Keith Brown. Brown's songs are all diverse, each dealing with a different emo tion. Brown commented, "Chris tians are real people that feel emo tions ... Love, heartbreak, disap pointment, joy. It was necessary to include songs on this record that are able to speak to ALL these things." Celebration Goes on Tour Singers Looking for Time of Growth By Kathryn Letterman Celebration, a gospel concert choir at Montreat-Anderson College, is going on tour March 5-14, 1993. Concert members include: Marcy Buckner, LaVonda Fast, Rob Lewis, Heather Rich, Krista Schraeder, Chad Smith, and Greg Steinbarger. The group is directed by Dr. Bob Neil. Friday, March 5, the choir will appear at Pine Grove Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tennessee. Sun day, March 7, they will sing at three churches in Nashville,Tennessee-Christ Presbyterian, Glen Leven Presbyterian, and Trinity Presbyterian. Celebration's next stop will be Birmingham, Ala bama. On Tuesday, March 9, the group will perform at Mountain Brook Pres byterian, and on Wednesday, March 10, at South Highland Presbyterian. The singers end their tour in Tennessee, per forming Thursday, March 11, at Signal Mountain Presbyterian, Friday, March 12,atCentralBaptist,andSunday,March 14, at Strawberry Plains Presbyterian. The members of Celebration are looking forward to the trip. Maik Wright commented on the tour say ing, "It's coming up awfully quick, but I think we're ready for it" Rob Lewis added, "fm excited about it" Krista Schraeder also commented, "I think it's going to be a new experience for a lot of us, and we ate all going to grow." Prospective Students to Join Collie Life By Kathryn Letterman The Admissions Office is sponsoring Spiing Visitation Weekend on March 19 and 20.' Approximately 50 prospective students are expected to arrive on campus. On Friday, March 19, all classes will be open from 8 am to 2 pm for any visiting student wishing to attend. That night, Kim Boyce will be in the Anderson Auditorium perfomiing her Facts of Love tour. On Saturday, March 20, there will be music and athletic meetings in the morning. Also, entering freshmen may take the Bible Scholarship Exam at 10:30 am. Following lunch, a High Ropes Course will begin at 1:30 pm. Visitation weekend is vital in a student's decision in choosing the right college. Rob Lewis, a freshman here at M-AC, indicated how visitation aided his own choice, saying, "The willingness of the other students to take time to hang out with me really influenced my decision to go to M-AC" Anyone interested in hosting a prospective student for visitation weekend should contact the Admissions Office.
