Volume I, Number 8 "Esse Quam Videri" Hoopsters Sneak Past Tusculum, Third-Ranked Tenn. Wesleyan Elk Parkis Tatum scores twice at buzzer Thursday, February 1,1996 by Christian Malone The men’s basketball team upped their record to 6-12 with back-to-back down-to-the-wire one-point victories over Tusculum and Tennessee Wesleyan in the screaming atmosphere of McAlister Gymnasium last week. On January 26th, the guys won a thriller 79-78 on a Luke Tatum lay-in at the buzzer. The Cavaliers outplayed Tusculum, but couldn’t put the visitors away, as they came back to take the lead 78-77 with three seconds remaining. Aron Gabriel then airballed a des peration three-pointer. But, in shades of North Carolina State’s last-second vic tory in the 1983 Final Four, Tatum grabbed the airball and put in a lay-up as the buzzer sounded. The Montreat bench emptied and mobbed their hero. Tatum quipped, “1 was just in the right place at the right time. When 1 saw it was going to be an airball, I just positioned myself to grab the rebound and lay it in.” Last Thursday night, it was Ten nessee Wesleyan on the short end of a one-point game, 71-70. Montreat trailed most of the night, but Tatum came through again, this time with a three- pointer that gave Montreat a 66-65 lead with 2:59 to play. From there, the Cavaliers held off the opposition to improve to 5-7 in the TVAC. Forward Jason Baker led the Cavaliers with 19 points, while Tyrone Jones added 15, and Tatum 10. A pumped-up Gabriel said after the game, “We’ve been in a number of close games this season. It’s good to see us being able to make the key plays at the key moments.” Has MC lost its Dance Fever? by Christ! Waddell Where were you Friday, January nineteenth, between 9:00pm and 1:00am? Well, chances are you were not at the Back to School Dance. The dances re cently have been scarcely attended. Groups come in and out periodi cally, but few stay. Queen Musengwa stated, “Ninety people or more showed up for the last dance; they just came in and out the entire evening.” Students give many reasons for not attending. Sophomore baseball player, Sven Berg admits, “Because I’m just wasting my time trying to pick up girls that don’t want me.” Transfer student, Michele Mims snickers, “If there were cages to dance in, more students would show up.” Other students have different rea sons. Sophomore basketball player, Tyrone Jones states, “They are not well advertised, and my peers don’t attend.” Junior, Bethany Bailey agrees, “I never know when we are having a dance.” Dave Sperry, Student Activities Di rector, disagrees. He has put announce ments on the white dry erase boards in Belk Campus Center, and the monthly calendars have the special events. Dances are coordina.ted and are not inexpensive. “The music alone for the last dance was $350.00,” stated Dave Speny. There have been some complaints from students about the music. Senior, baseball player, Chris Hoyle remarked, “The music isn’t consistent.” Reacting to the cost of the dance. Senior Jodie Carriker complains, “You would think the songs people requested would be played at that cost, but they are not.” The Student Activities Committee also spent money on food, but they al ready had the decorations left over from a previous dance. Dave Sperry states, “If you really want to make the dances more fun, get involved.” The Student Activities Comm ittee has meetings in the private dining room in the cafeteria during dinner, in which you can voice your complaints, sugges tions, or encouragements. Although the team has suffered sev eral harsh loses, they still try to keep their spirits up. MaeKrisha Jones commented, “We try hard, but right now we are in a slump and frustrated.” “We’re trying our best. We never get down even when we don’t win a game,” concedes Jennifer Hobbs. Elisha Perkins responded, “We need to be more aggressive and get into better shape. We have good outside play, but we need to improve on rebounding and our ability to run the court.” “We don’t have enough players, they have ei ther quit or are injured,” replied Gina Granger. “1 predict that we will win the tour nament championships and make it to the finals,” voiced Jones.
