Still in Search of Chaplain

Winter Graduates
Honored
by Carolyn Sanders
Thirty-two Montreat College stu
dents attended a Winter Graduate
Recognition Ceremony and Recep
tion in their honor on Saturday, Feb
ruary 3rd in the Chapel of the Prodi
gal on the Montreat Campus. This
annual event, hosted by President
and Mrs. William Hurt and the
Alumni Association, was an oppor
tunity for those students completing
their degrees since last May, to be
recognized and receive their diplo
mas. Eight traditional students from
the Montreat Campus and twenty-
four nontraditional students from the
Montreat School of Professional and
Adult Studies (S.P.A.S.) in Charlotte
and Asheville were awarded their di
plomas in abrief informal ceremony.
Academic Dean Beth Doriani and
Dr, Isaac Owolabi presented the
graduates with their diplomas, in
cluding six students earning Master
of Business Administration degrees.
Over two hundred family members,
friends, and professors wishing them
well joined the graduates. Many of
these graduates will return in May
to participate in the formal com
mencement activities.
A sad, yet poignant highlight of
the ceremony was a special presen
tation given by Debra Wright, Di
rector of the Charlotte Campus.
Roxanna M. Hines (S.P.A.S. BAC-
36) was killed in an automobile ac
cident last April and would have
graduated with her cohort in Decem
ber. Roxie’s husband accepted a
Certificate of Achievement Diploma
in her honor, and attendees were
shown a remembrance plaque that
will be placed on a lectern at the
Charlotte Campus. Mrs. Hines was
loved and admired by students and
faculty, and they wanted to remem
ber her in this way. We congratu
late all August and December gradu
ates and welcome them as official
Montreat College alumni.

Lately there have been some ques
tions in regard to what is happening
in Montreat’s search for a new chap
lain. Over the last few weeks, I have
investigated the issue and this is
what! have found.
Montreat College sought out ap
plications for a new Chaplain early
last fall, with aspirations to have a
new Chaplain at the beginning of
this semester. Before Ed Bonner
left, a Search Committee consisting
of seven faculty, two staff and two
students were appointed by Presi
dent Hurt to investigate and obtain
someone to fill this position. Find
ing a new Chaplain is not something
that can be rushed into. Committee
chairman Lloyd Davis comments,
“the committee knows how impor
tant the Chaplain is and is being pur
posefully deliberate. We firmly be
lieve God has the right person. We
are trying to discern who that per
son is.”
While the school is without a
Chaplain, the Spiritual Life Commit
tee has stepped in to fulfill the of
fice obligations. For those of you
who are unfamiliar with the Spiri
tual Life Committee - its members
and purposes, here is a brief sum
mary. The Committee is composed
of four faculty members and two stu
dents, including Jay Guffey serving
as the Chair, Jim Shores, Jim
Southerland, and Carmen
Copenhaver as faculty representa
tives, and students Allison Andrews
and Jason Bryant.
The customary purpose of the
Spiritual Life Committee is “to work
with the Chaplain in planning and
evaluating the Staley Lecture Series,
Spiritual Emphasis Week, the chapel
programs, and to advise the Student
Christian Association.” When the
Spiritual Munchies...

The apostle Paul writes in his
letters to the Romans, “There is
no one righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands,
no one who seeks God. .M! have
turned away, they have together
become worthless; there is no one
who does good, not even one...”
(Romans3:10-12) The reality of
our sins, as Christians, is ex
tremely humbling to swallow.
Yet, with this full reality of man’s
sin, “there is one God and one
mediator between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus, who gave
himself as a ransom for all men”
(I Timothy 2:5-6).
So, the question then becomes,
how do we keep a balanced un
derstanding of our sin and a right
understanding of God’s incred
ible gift of righteousness and life
to all who believe? Jennifer
Knapp writes in her latest CD, “I
sit here and question why my God
loves me though 1 have never done
a good thing or a righteous deed.
Though I am rich, 1 claim that I
am poor...now I never claimed to
be anymore than I am, anymore
than I seem; in fact, 1 bill myself
so much less than I am, so much
less than He sees.”
Humbly, we are called to give
every area of our life completely
to the Lord because he lovingly
gave us a//of his! Thus, may we
shout from the rooftops that Jesus
is Lord, but “may we never boast
except in the cross of our Lord
Jesus Christ, through which the
world has been crucified to me,
and I to the world” (Gal. 6:15).

Dr. Gweeto
Has Answers
The Question:
Dear Dr. Gweeto,
I have a great relationship with my
mom, but lately she's been playing
these weird pranks on me. Like last
night she put oysters in my shoes,
and today while I was at work, she
reset all the clocks in my apartment
to different times. I love my mom
and I try to have a sense of humor
about these things, but enough is
enough! What should I do???
Morose in Montreat
The An.swer:
Dear Morose,
My response to situations like this
is ‘it is better to give than to receive.’
I say you should go to your mother’s
house and return the oysters into her
shoes, and reset all her clocks to dif
ferent times. Oh, and it is always nice
to give a little extra... get some con
diments out of her fridge and put
them in her shower. Hope it works.
Good Luck!! Dr. Gweeto

I just wanted to let you know that
you’re doing a great job on the pa

Nice job on The Whelslonel I’ve
enjoyed reading each issue.
- Don King
Although I like the [Whetstone] con
tent better than other newsletters the
school puts out, I dislike the format
so much I won’t read it in the fu
ture. It takes up too much room on
my desk just to set it down, and it’s
impossible to read for someone with
trifocals without laying it down and
moving it around. What is wrong
with 81/2 X II folded in half? Is
there some reason for that format
other than someone just thought it
looked cool? - Kitty Sundahl

Of roughly twenty-five appli

one more candidate during the first

another at a later date. Currently the
goal is to have a composite recom

February from the Search Commit

Christian Ministries Division (Bible

a new Chaplain as early as the end
of March. As this issue unfolds, we
will be sure to keep you posted.
