Page 2 • The Whetstone • February 14,2001 Spiritual Munchies..^ ' By Jennifer Albertson This article is tor all people who desire a good marriage, li docs not matter if you have not found that special someone or whether you have been married for many years. It seems that one of the dangers facing us today is the thought that when one gets married all things change and that they will be thelipouse that they want to be over night. Of course, when one takes a .step back to really think about it. they realize that this thought is ludicrous. Our tendency, as humans, is to put off changing until tomorrow next week or when some event in the future takes place. This is a real danger The book of Joshua says, to “choose THIS DAY whom you will serve“ (Joshua 24:15). If you desire a good marriage you also must choose THIS DAY whom you will serve and whom you will love. If you are unmarried please count your blessings! You can begin this day to prepare your heart and your actions for your spouse. If you want to be a faithful and loving spou.se you must begin now to prepare tor that...It does not come naturally. You can practice today keeping your Noughts of other people pure and faithful, enter into a relationship ONLY If It ts something that you know God desires, learn to love and see people as Christ loves, learn how to cook or fix household items the ist IS endless. But. above all this, begin practicing the presence of GotL practice being faithful to God in your walk with him. Many hope to share the love of Jesus with their children; but His love must first be truly known by you in your heart and life. For all of the married folk, God bless you! He has given voti a partner that you are called to love and be faithful to. You get the opnor- tunity to understand Christ’s love for you in a way that the unmarried do not understand. But, as you well know, the key to marriage is not .some special formula of things that YOU can do (we fitil all the time to satisfy our spouse). Instead, the key to a good marriage is Jesus Christ' With out Him nothing can be good and blessed. A marriage cannot prosper w'lthout the grace of Jesus Christ. Whether you are man-ied, engaged, or single choose the Lord today e desires fellowship with you! This year it is on Ihursday, but next year it will be on some other day of the week, and we will all be surprised by it then too. I mean, it’s not like it’s just a regular day, right?” - Beau Mofiatt By Becca Snyder Who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become as.sociated w ith the modem lovey-dovey holiday bearing his name? Well, there are innumerable myths and legends surrounding the life and martyr dom of this saint. Every book, arti cle, and web site offers a different explanation of Valentine's Day his tory and tradition. Most sources agree that there were a number of Saint Valentines in church history. And it should be noted that each of these men have many legends surrounding them. Through the centuries the truth about Saint Valentine has been mis shapen, mutilated, built on, twisted, and finally lost. However, some of the more reliable sources for his torical information, including The Hi.story Channel, relate a common myth about this saint. It seems there was a Saint Val entine who w'as a prie.st, beheaded in Rome in the third century A.D. One tradition holds that Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage because he felt that men would make better warriors without tics to home and family. And Valentine, out of compassion for young lovers, married several couples in secret. When his defiance of Claudius was discovered, it brought about his martyrdom. Some stories claim that Valentine fell in love with the jailor’s blind daughter " i'^ was impri.soncd, and sent ici note signed “From youi Va cii' Other accounts say the gir blind, and Valentine prayed for and she w'as healed.
