The Whetstone • October 22,2001 • Page 8 Montreat in Politics Continued from Page 1 dictate Woody Quinn joined these three incumbents on stage in Gaither for the forum. Moderated by Ashcville-Buncombe County League of Women Voters rep. Mrs. Ruth Christie, the forum seemed a success. “I think it accomplished its goal,” commented Quinn after ward. “It was meant to introduce the students to the candidates so that they would know who was running and who to vote for,” he explained. Each of the candidates was asked to give their view on four areas. Discussion began broad by exploring the major concerns facing Montreat. From there it became a little more specific in looking at environmental concerns and the relationship between the town and the college. The questions ended by probing the speakers for their personal four-year plans. These questions were chosen as the four most popular among Montreat College students. Just before fall break. Dean Lance sent an e-mail announcing the convoca tion and asking that students drop their questions into the box placed in Lower Belk Lobby. The four were chosen from those turned in by the students. Major issues included tax and revenue, water supply, parking and roads, and environmental concerns. Dealing with environmental issues The Team That Dances By Tim Tyson Last year, during the spring semester, the idea that this college needed a dance team that could perform during halftime at basketball games began to circulate among students. The plans to have a team for this school year were in the early stages of development at the end of la.st semester. This summer, a group of Montretians went to a dance camp at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City from August 1st until the 4th. Since the start of this fall semester, the team has spent many eve nings working hard to get ready for this year’s basketball season. Finally after spending much time and energy, the Montreat Dance Team fea turing Lindsay King, Marina Bassalina, Dana Brandt, Courtney Smith, Yelena Saladukha, Aaron Connell, Jessica Gattenby and Captain Heather Hayes will help the basketball teams kick off their season with their inau gural performance at Midnight Madness on Thursday, October 25th at the McAlister Gym. From there the answers differed a little more. While commissioners Hollins and He.ster both expressed a lack of good relationship between the college and the town, com missioner Grimsley commented, “I feel the relationship between the two is that of good neighbors.” Allowing for some possible ten sions, he added, “The expansion of the college facilities into In the Oaks should help avoid problems of expansion within Montreat." Quinn drove home his main campaign theme, “I would love to see us all work together. The students are the greatest asset in this town and if given infonnation about these issues, they can help bring improve ment.” After disclosing their plans for the future, commissioner Hol lins ended the forum by thanking and congratulating the students for getting involved and showing con cern for the community. The first person to solve this puzzle and bring it to the Alumni Office will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to Madisons COI.
