the sea, and everything in
them- the Lord, who remains
faithful forever.

Montreat Loses a Good Friend
By Becca Snyder
Dr. Jack Crawford, a good
friend and Professor Emeritus of
the college, passed away Saturday,
November 24, at age
69, after a brief stmg-
gle with cancer. He
worked for the col
lege from 1970 until
his retirement in 1997.
He served as Chair
of the History Depart
ment, professor of his
tory, and even as direc
tor of admissions in
1984.
Dr. King, Dr. Risher, and vice
president Jac Whatley all reported
that Crawford had a reputation for
Dr. Jack Crawford
being both a challenging teacher
and a friendly, gregarious person.
“He probably never knew a
stranger,” commented Don King.
Many people remem
ber him as always
caring for his students,
and even keeping in
touch with many after
they graduated.
Jac Watley said
Dr. Crawford was
always finding finan
cial donors for the
college, and inventing
new ways to save
money. He reported Crawford as
being “an interesting combination
of someone who was very frugal
and very generous at the same time.
... He always thought of the col
lege before he thought of himself.”
Before coming to Montreat,
Crawford spent nine years as a mis
sionary for the Presbyterian Church,
(US) in Zaire, working in theolog
ical education. He was Professor
of Church History, Vice-Dean, and
Faculty of Theology at Free Uni
versity of Congo during his time in
Africa.
Dr. Jack Crawford’s heart for
people, teaching, and service
remains a fond memory at Montreat
College, and he will certainly be
missed. His local memorial service
was held Saturday, December 1, in
Gaither Chapel.
Montrest’sPrayer Vigil
By Tim Tyson
This last Friday saw the start of
Montreat College’s first and only
24-hour prayer vigil for the year
2001 in the Chapel of the Prodigal.
The purpose of the vigil was to
have an organized time of prayer
in which the whole community
could participate. The vigil started
at 12:30pm on Friday, November
30 and ended at 12:30pm on Satur
day, December 1.
The time was broken up with
three times of praise and worship:
at the beginning of the vigil, at mid
night, and to close the vigil. Spe
cial thanks go out to the worship
team for going on the all out praise
circuit.
The only glitch in the program
was a short location change, which
moved the vigil downstairs to room
117/118 for a few hours due to
a scheduling conflict. It was then
moved back upstairs for the praise
service.
Overall, the vigil was an unprec
edented success in that the primary
goal was achieved. A location was
available for a communal time of
prayer
An event such as this has not
happened in a long time here at
Montreat. If students are interested
in having more events like this
please send an e-mail to Chaplain
Bill Cain at Bcain@montreat.edu.
Thank you Bill.
