Page 2 • The Whetstone • December 7, 2001 Spiritual Munchies... By Jennifer Albertson "We wish you a merry Christmas..." "'Tis the season to be jolly..." & "We are happy tonight, walkin’ in a winter wonderland” are phrases that run rampant around this time of the season. Is this merely a profane mood? Is it only an emotional experience? Or can wc truly have joy? Our first step in answering this question sliould be to turn back to the basis for all of our answers.. .Jesus Chri.st and the Word of God. What does Scripture say regarding the topic of joy? To begin. Scripture says that true joy is not found in the satisfactions of this earth (Ecc. 2; 10. 11 ;9). And the joy of the godless is momentary (Job 20:5). In fact, C.S Lewis wrote in his book Surprised By Joy, "1 often wonder whether all pleasures arc not substitutes for Joy.” What is this joy that C.S. Lewis is writing about? Throughout his life, he had few experiences of joy. He writes that he was con stantly on the hunt for it. However, all his looking w'as in vain. Lewis was blind to the fact that it was really joy hunting him. Thus, all his experiences of joy were mere pointers to the one true joy, Jesus Christ. Lewis’ conclusion coincides with the taith as is written in Scripture. We read that God is the giver of joy (Ecc. 2:26). It is Christ’s appointment to give joy (Isaiah 61:3). True joy is found in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). And Joy is promised to the saints (Psalm 132:16). All of Scripture speaks of true joy. God is joy. Hence, in this season, do not worship the mere pointers to joy. In.stead. worship the one true joy: this is Jesus Christ our Lord. Alpha Chi * . . _ . ... ii«„.-l-inson.
