Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
By Tim Tyson
On Monday January 21, Monlreat
and the rest of the country cele
brated Martiti I.utlter King, Jr, Dtiy.
A holiday that was
celobralctl as “a day
oti not a d;iy oil”
as was expressed
in an L-mail sent
out from President
Hurt.
In observance of
the holiday, tlie Stu
dent Government
held a panel dis
cussion, emceed by
rYnderson Rep. Sarah Ennis, Ihe
patiel consisteti of 3 speakers who
outlined the ways that MLK. Jr. has
alTected their lives.
.Among the pttnelists were Pro
fessor Rob Anderson, Chaplain Bill
Cain, and Father Genird Freeman
of the “Church of the Incarnation.’’
I hrough these panelists’ discus
sions, a wide variety of experi
ences were reflected in the lives of
these ihiee men. However, the same
over tirching theme was Iliat they
were, in the words of Father Free
man, “glad recipients of the fruit of
tmother mmi's work.”
In regard to the
couvo. President Hurt
commented, “ This was
great and spontaneous,
in the sense that it
came from the stu
dents. It was a privi
lege to be a piirt of it.”
The SGA has
spent much time dis
cussing tlie holiday ind
how it should be celebrated at this
school. After taking a poll of inter
ested students, it was decided that
a convo dedicated to the life tmd
impact of MLK, Jr.’s life would bo
the best option.
SCiA President Adam Schultz
expressed that this was “so much
better than taking the day off.”
For many years, Montreal did not
olfrcially recognize this day but it
was not the only one according to
student Susan Powers. “No other
school I htive been lt> has done any
thing for MLK, Jr. l);i>' and this
was retilly awesome.”
“The ultimate meitsure of a man
is not where he stands in moments
of comfort ;ind convenience, but
where he stands at times of chal
lenge and controversy.” - - Martin
Luther King, Jr.
