Mascot to Change
By Wes Waldorf
Based on recent polling from stu
dents and faculty, the Student Gov-
ernnient Association (SG.A) has
come to the conclusion that the cur
rent Cavalier mascot of Montreat
College has no legitimate btick-
groimd, or history, mid it has been
decided by the SGA dial die mascot
shall be chmigal to that of sUuient
choice, based on history and pride
for the college. .After long deliber
ation, die SGA has narrowed the
limit to these diree choices:
The Montreat Wmiipus Cats. The
Wampus Cat has been sitid to liave
a blue colored lur, six legs, mid
resemble a mountain lion. In a
recent article, the Black Mountain
News claimed that the six legs are
used for: “Four to run at die speed
of liglit, and two to figlit with all
its might.” It is said to inliabit the
Montrettt Wilderness, where it cmi
take on a number of personalities,
fi'om ferocious to timid. To date,
only two actual Wampus Cats have
been spotted within the Montreat
Cove.
The Montreat Black Bears. Based
on the frequent siglitings of black
bears, mid their native land sur
rounding us, die SGA feels that the
Black Bears would be an honor
able mascot to carry oin teams into
playoffs. The SGA also proposes
that the school gym be titled “fhe
Den.”

spending. “The college has spent
more than an adequate amomit
of funding on sports development
and faculty sabbaticals,” he says.
“1 believe security and
grounds beautification
should have better
financial support. Widi
the help of my cus
todial temn, I plmi to
help make Montreat an
enjoyable place to live
for the students.”
Alan Edwards,
Facilities Director for
the college, expressed
his excitement about
Schindell’s vision. “It
will be nice to finally
have the money to
repair the plumbing in
the donns and manage
the roof water runoff'. Maybe we’ll
even have some left over to plmit
some sassafras trees arouiul The
Chapel of die Prodigal.”
.Along with Wendell Schindell,
Montreat welcomes his wife,
Rachell, and eleven year old dtiugli-
ter Kendell. They are looking
forward to relocating here. “I’ve
always wmited to live in the back
woods,” says Rachell. Kendell adds,
“It will be exciting being around all
the college kids.”
