Page 2 • The Whetstone • April 1, 2002 Spiritual Munchies... By Jennifer Albertson There once was a man that lived in the 1600’s w'ho knew the secret to life. His deepest desire and longing for each minute of every'day was to be in the presence of the Living God. He sought to do every thing for the love of God.* Paul writes to the church at Colosse, “whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through hmi.. .whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord...” (Colossians 3:17 & 23). This past Sunday, if you heard Pastor White’s sennon, you will remember that he was teaching the congregation to ask, seek, and knock and God will answer. But, the punch-line was what Jesus said at the end of the parable, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask hhn!” (I.uke 11:13). Do we constantly ask to be aware of and walk with the Holy Spirit? Is our every word and deed in the name of the Lord .lesus? When we are physically sick, is our focus on the Lord or on our self? Wliile doing work is our mind ever aware of the presence of God? Is our sense of humor in liglit of God’s grace and love? I would venture to guess that the answer to all these questions is ‘no.’ Paul challenges us to pray without ceasing (1 Thes. 5:17). Do we do this? Definitely not, for, we are a fallen people. Yet, we are called to strive for this perfection. This is a great challenge, yet also it is a great gift from the Lord. He longs to give us the secret to a life of obedience and love for Him. He desires to be in constant communion with us. What a great God we serve! * Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the lYesence of God, (Grand Rapids, Spire Books, 1967). By Tim Tyson March 14 around 4:45am an esti mated 154 gallons of hot water rushed into Anderson room 203. In a “fluke acci dent,” according to Facilities Director .-Man Edwards, the half inch PVC pipe that feeds the hot water directly into RA Johanna Gledliill’s sink made a complete break. Accordmg to Mr. Edwards there was a “maxi mum flow in Anderson for at least 20 minutes.” The water at full flow has been estunated to be a rate of 1 gallon c\'ery 7.8 seconds. At this speed an estimated 3 bathtubs dumped onto the second floor. Mr. Edwards explains the break as the result of the PVC expanding and contracting where it conirects with the metal. He went on to express that “when you have a pressurized system things are going to bretik.” In room 203 the hot water level rose to two inches and meandered into other rooms on the hall. Johanna walking througli this water explained, “My feet were ok.” The water also flowed down to tire first floor soaking much of RD Kathy Wince’s Apartment. Damages so far are estimated at over Si,000. Eventually tire fire alarms went off displacing all of the .Vnderson ladies to the BeUc Lobby for about 45 minutes. In the wake of the flood into his apartment Ernest Wince has expressed “My wife and I would like to thank God for his blessings and watchful care over us, and a special thanks to the.knderson RAs and those who helped get us back into our home.’ Accordmg to .Tohanua the pipe that broke was a new plastic pipe that was installed tfocc weeks before the break to fix a leak under her sink. A mauite nance staffer informed her after the break, that the new pipe was the right pipe for tlie job. Ill a completely unrelated mci- dent.ataboutlhesamctmto,a water pipe in Davis also broke. 1 ms breakage was a crack in a recircula tion pipe between the bathroom and cio„, o„ u,. f». ^ 'Hiis was a case of piping fron givhig out. Due to the timing of tli L Luts Mr. Edwards checked w,til the City of Black Mountmn and examined the breaks and detor- mined that they were not related.
