Sports MONTRUT collie B CAfAWElS Women’s Basketball ‘Re-Loads “With all the accolades and honors garnered by the Class of 2002, this team has the potential to be just as good,” said head coach Joe Hagan of the 2002-2003 women’s basketball. “I've drawn some conclusions about what seems to work best for our program in considei'ation of NAIA II, the AAC (Appalachian Athletic Conference), and our geographic location,” Hagan noted thoughtfully, “and portions of it will look like something taken out of a playbook from the 1950’s and 60’s. I believe that the type of athlete we can best recruit at Montreat College will best fit into this scheme.” The lone senior has a list of credentials as long as the range on her jumper..5’10” forward Jennifer Brooks broke into the limelight her freshman year when she ran off a string of sL\ games shooting over 60% from the field, including the fifth best performance to date when she hit eight of ten field goal attempts in the Lady Cavs first ever recorded victory over Milligan College. She begins this year with 1484 career points and a reference in the NAIA national stats as Division H’s 6''’ leading scorer in 2001 -02 with a 20.4 points per game average. 5’7” guard Julie Buchanan brings a healthy 14.1 PPG back for her junior campaign. More than just a scorer, Buchanan actually had more steals la.st season than Montreat’s all- time leading thief (teammate Crystal Bennett). Junior classmates 5’11” Jill Myers and 5’7” Brandy Taylor have been waiting patiently for two years and appear to be ready to step up. Myers, a slender swing player Seniors Honored Monica Hickman and Joy Ramsey were honored Senior Night at the Lady Cav’s last home game. A New Self Image 419 West State Street Black Moitfitein, NO 28711 The Whetstone has the ability to move inside or out with good touch at either end of her range. Always the hustler, Taylor will see time at the 2-guard but has the strength and presence of mind to be effective closer to the basket. 5’9” Shana Hoilman returns to action after two serious knee surger ies and a year and a half of inactivity. Judging from pre-season playing, she hasn’t skipped a beat from a fresh man year w’hen she averaged just just under a remarkable six steals per game. There are two more first-year players with non-traditional matricu lation patterns. Even though she’s attended two other colleges, 5’8” Jessica Mills has yet to play colle- giately. She averaged 14 points and eight rebounds in leading McDowell Higlt School to the 4-A regional finals and a record of 25-5. Also 5’9” Anna Shaver took under five points and three rebounds through 26 games. 5’8” LeAnn Lane has been playing volleyball for two years but seems to have missed the orange colored ball since being a standout perfonner in high school. Guard play is the strength of the sophomore class as roommates 5’5” Monica Helderman and 5’6” Jaymie Rowe hope to show tlieir opponents what one year’s experi ence can do for you. After showing moments of brilliance as a freshman, Helderman is a more balanced and savvy player that will be expected to take charge and take “charges” as a floor general. Although receiving virtually zero playing time in her fir.st year (was denied a “redshiit” year), Rowe has still made major strides in her confidence level and .skill devel opment by simply participating in college practices for over a year. Two transfers, both of whom will be redshirted this year, have returned home. 6’0” Erin McArdle spent two years at Darton Junior College in Albany, Georgia after helping to lead her A.C. Reynolds High School team to the NCHSAA4A State Champion ship in 2000. She was ranked as high as third in junior college rebounding in the state of Georgia her sophomore year. 5’6” Megan Luther spent a year at the U]iiversity of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee after having been selected to the Blue/White All- Star Game her senior year at Enka High School. She scored over a thou sand points for her career and averaged a year off, after leading Wesleyan Christian to a 24-7 slate averaging twelve points and six assi.sLs, to serve as a short-term missionary overseas with Youth With A Mission. There are also four traditional incoming freshmen that balance the account by bringing a variety of skills and attributes. 5’10” Laura Gortney hails from East Burke High School where her role of defensive stopper gave her the opportunity to gai'ner 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. She has already proven in pre-season that she will be a threat offensively as well, just like 6’0” Kelly McArdle, the second portion of Montreat’s new sister act. The younger sibling of Erin had quite a career herself at .A.C. Reynolds aver aging over ten points and four boards while spending mo.st of her time on the perimeter. 5’9” Jaime Gragg gives the Lady Cavs a terrific fi-io from McDowell County. Somewhat overlooked as a college prospect, she erupted for 15 points in the 2002 Blue/ White All-.Star Game, a performance that included hitting five treys. 5’6”Kaylin Fisher wins the award for greatest dis tance traveled coming to I Montreat from Ft. Myers, J Florida where she aver- g aged 14 points and nine * -S rebounds for Evangelical Christian School. Fisher will be redshirted this year because of a torn ACL. Despite the loss of so many players, the coaches of tlie Appalachian Athletic Conference have picked Montreat to finish third in the twelve-team race this season behind Brevard and lennessee Wesleyan. The Lady Cavs picked up one first place vote signal ing that the league is still aware that no other program has had as much success over the past three years. “1 hope we’ve reached the point where we simply ‘re-load’ rather than rebuild,” said Hagan. “I’m anxious to see how this group views our recent past and wants to create its own legacy. Once a big train gets moving it’s hard to slow down. 1 hope the momentum we’ve built up will help to carry us until this team finds it’s own identitv.” Activities Schedule November 15 8:30 p.m. Flip-Hop Show at Asheville Music Zone November 17 8:30 a.m. Asheville Track Club/Bent Creek Trail Runs; call 628-7637 for more info. . 9 p.m. Aaron Katz Band at Asheville Music Zone November 18 6:45 p.m. Bell-y Dancing Class at West Asheville Community; call 258-2235for more info.
