Church ond State From The Editor’s Desk... Does Christian Heavy Metal Have a Niche? By Tim Tyson ■'Hard core/lieavy metal Christian rock.” Up until a few nights ago I had never given “hard core/heavy metal Christian” music much thought. I had always passed it up, thinking it was really nothing more than hoar.se gib berish bellowing from the speakers. Questions such as “Can people actu ally understand what they’re saying?” and “This is a ministry?” would Hoat through my head. I had a great ten dency to merely bnish off the whole concept of “hard core” music as just abrasive, slightly foolhardy, unnec essary and “Christian hard core” as really misguided. All of this recently changed. During the Disciple concert held at The Hoase Teen Center over in Marion, NC November 20 1 was exposed to hard core Christianity. A breed of go.spel giving that, as 1 said before, 1 had never given much thought nor credenee. This is a style of extremely guttural and emo tional preaching that involves singing' shouting on a decibel level 130 or more. Hard core by itself offers the musi cians and listeners the opportunity to unleash pent up feelings, fear.s, anger, desire and rage all in a loud fashion u.sing the common combination of Th« Montr«*t Coll*9» Volet WHETSTONE Montreat College Box 838 Montreat, NC 28757 828.669.8012 Ext. 3710 whetstone@montreat.edu Managing Editor Tim Tyson .Asst. Christian hard core goes many steps beyond this and walks in the realm of deep spiritual desire for Christ, woe and grieving over our complete spiritual corruptness and thankfulness for the complete and uncompromising pronii.se of salva tion through the blood of Christ. While combining the art of hard core with the unlca.shing ofthe.se very real, but often intangible, emotions associated with Christianity. Thi.s puts a lace on what goes on deep down inside the hone.st Christian. Now, of course, not everyone may choose to even attempt to express themselves in this fa.shion. Regardless, there is an audience ready and willing to par ticipate ranging from 13 years of age even up to 50. To give a point of reference, at the Disciple concert 48 teenagers gave their lives to Clirist, after listening to the genuine cries for the Lord from deep within lead singer Kevin Young. A casual observer would know that something that leads children into the paths of righteousness cannot possi bly be all bad. Especially since the decision to follow Christ is also at the prompting of the Holy Spirit. For you Calvinists out there, this means that those kids were chosen by God to go to a concert of music that is abrasive to mo.st ears and find Him in it. This blows my mind. Praise God that he can be found in the things that looked completely foolish to a casual observer .such as 1. In that light I am going to have to say that Christian hard core music definitely has a niche in the body of Christ.
