Coke products will no longer be available at the cafeteria, bookstore, or vending machines. The college asked both Coke and Pepsi to offer contract proposals and according to Dirk Wilmoth, Vice President of Finance and Technology “Pepsi had a better offer.” The deal includes athletic sign sponsorship, increased promotional giveaways for students. So far reactions have been mixed. Statistics show that in Montreat the 70% of students are Pepsi drinkers. This aided Cokes decision to back out. want Catacombs to be used by God for that return,” says Walker. Walker explains, “We are growing and learning about leading worship each week and day. We talked about possibly incorporating a Bible study in it, but for now, it's a time to wor ship God honestly.” Montreat College Box 838 Montreal, NC 28757 828.669.8012 Ext. 3710 whetstone@montreat.edu Managing Editor Asst. First, 1 want to apologize for any feelings that were offended due to the signs asking for donations to aid Iraqi civilians. 1 understand that as a controversial issue, people will disagree, which is FINE. However, I will not apologize for posting the signs. Secondly, I wish to address some assumptions 1 felt were made after reading these signs. Please read care fully. This is what the signs DO NOT say. They do not state that Iraq was innocent. They do not say that we do not support America. They do not say we didn’t mourn over September 11. They do not advertise anything that goes against Jesus’ teachings. Please understand that. By aiding those in need, be they your neiglibor or someone around the world whom you will never meet, you are doing two things: loving your enemies and being an example of Christ’s love. I’m not sure 1 understand the disrespect that was displayed by tear ing down tlie poster in the Student Center. When it was defaced, tliat was blatant disregard for the Bible. Matthew 6:42-48 demands compas sion; we merely asked for spare toiletries. You do not have to help others, but don’t rob your peers of the joy of giving to those less fortu nate. Jesus himself commands us to do so; “For I was hungiy and you fed me. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink...” The righteous will then ask when did we see you? Jesus, the King of all Kings will reply, “I assure you, when you did it to the least of these my brothers, you were doing it to me,” (Matthew 25:35-) In closing, I want to thank you. In doing the selfish act of destroying that poster, you enabled me to write this despite the anger and disgust that I feel. I feel compelled to show God’s love through understanding your motives and respecting you; it is difficult, however, to reciprocate something such as respect when it was not presented to me in the first place. -Beth Rush Letters to ^ the Editor can be mailed to W hetstone Cai Montrest.edu by March 6th ^ The Whetstone Living M^ater By Johanna Wright To Sin or Not to Sin? Exploring Temptations Therefore, since we iiave a great high priest Who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let m hold firmly to the faith weiprofess. For we do .not have a high priest who is unable to. sympathize With our weaknesses, biitWe have one who lias been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy andfind grace, to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4; 14-16 In a world riddled with sin and evil, temptation is an ever-present reality for us all. Culture emphasizes our ‘right’ to indulge our every desire as vve ‘live-it-up’ and make themost of our one shot at life. We may not be able to avoid temptation, even Jesus faced temptations, but because of Christ’s vic- toiy over temptation we have the ability to overcome it through the power of the Holy Spirit. We do not have to let temptation turn into sin. We have assurance that though we face temptations, we do not do it alone! Jesus Christ knows our weaknesses and is able to not only sympa thize with us, but to enable us to ovei'come our struggles. Friends, we will fail in the face of temptation every single time if we ai^e not seeking our Lord and drawing on his strength. 1 urge you to deprive Satan of his foot hold in your life wherever it may be, and allow Christ to deliver you from sin through his abundant grace and mercy. american idol canned reality sports graduation ugly dress party meet montreat
