Girls Flip for American Idol
By Lyndsay Mayer
On any given Tuesday night,
every resident of Anderson’s third
floor piles onto Amanda Griffin’s
king-size bed. The credits roll, and
the squeals are subdued as all eyes
are on the television screen for
another episode of American Idol.
Tara Jobson, an Anderson RA,
is the ringleader of this Idol-crazed
crew. “I am Kelly Clarkson,” boasts
Jobson, continually refening to her
self as last season’s American Idol
winner.
Jobson hosts Thursday night Idol-
themed dance parties in her room,
which “are all the rage,” says Grif
fin.
“In order to be the American Idol
you need to be on Simon’s good
side,” is Jobson’s advice for Idol
wannabes. “1 showed Simon my
spunky side and Randy was very
attracted to my ghetto booty. But
Simon recognized my inner beauty
and vocal talent and realized 1 would
fly higher than Britney Spears.”
Human services major Allison
Chrisco is very supportive of her
neighbor. “1 thoroughly enjoy living
next door to Kelly Clarkson,” says
Chrisco. “I am the only person on
campus who knows that it’s really
her.”
Third floor Anderson resident,
Liza Morgan, recommends her picks
for next season. “[Freshman] Jenni
Sheets needs to be an American Idol
next year. Kelly Clarkson is good,
but Jenni Sheets is my hero.” Morgan
and GrilTin also nominate the Grinch,
to replace the sullen Simon Cowell.
Idol is becoming a bonding ritual,
according to Jenna Hood. “It’s really
fun to w'ateh Simon be mean to
everyone and pick people apart and
judge how everyone sings. It builds
community on our hall. We all watch
it together.”
Others are not so certain it’s
worth their time. “1 think it’s shal
low, another attempt to suck people
in and prey off their insecurities and
dreams,” says one student boldly.
‘it’s overrated and not worth my
energy. If 1 want good entertain
ment, I’ll go to a basketball game,”
says sophomore McGregor resident,

their stand, but are worried that Iraq
is up to no good. These nations make
up the European Union, (EU) which
is struggling to maintain a united
front-despite differing levels of sup
port for the US.
The situation in North Korea
cannot be ignored. In short, there
are five nations that were granted the
right to nuclear weapons as of 1967.
These nations are the US, France, the
UK, Russia, and China. India, Israel
and Pakistan never signed the treaty,
yet have nuclear weapons capability.
North Korea signed the treaty in sup
port of weapons monitoring world
wide, but removed itself from the
alliance in January of 2003. It felt the
treaty was allowing the US too much
power in the nuclear weapons arena.
North Korea is opening several new
nuclear reactors, claiming they are to
provide electricity to North Koreans.
This makes neighboring eountries,
such as Japan and South Korea, sus
picious and overly concerned.
In the face of a crisis emerg
ing at lightning speed, American
citizens have an obligation to remain
informed as the heavyweight in the
pending events we face as a nation on
the edge.
We are citizens and residents of a
nation that has bled to give each indi
vidual the right to an opinion. Your
opinion may be to hide your head in
the sand, or to support the war effort
with prayers for justice and the eradi
cation of terrorist regimes. Regard
less of your stand on the ensuing
conflict, your right to be intormed
transcends all opinion.
