One student from First Baptist Church at the rally shares his appreciation for the chapel band playing at the rally, “It’s a nice break for our youth group band. We play every Wednesday and Sunday and practice in between; it gets to be a lot. Paul Kendall, youth pastor at Montreat Presbyterian, recruited the chapel band for the SYATP rally. He recalls, “It rained at last year’s rally. This is a much better turnout.” Father Gerard Freeman, youth pastor for Church of the Incarna tion, preached at last year’s rally and declares, “The band is great. They really have a heart for this ministry.” Chapel Band Senior Matt Cheezem gave his testimony at the rally with the topic - find tangibles to remind you of what God has done. He asked of the crowd, “every time you see the [flagpole be reminded of God’s faith fulness.” This year’s SYATP theme, “Con sumed,” was taken from 1 Kings 18: 36-39 - Elijah’s encounter with the prophets of Baal. The theme was reiterated at the rally and plastered on posters and T-shirts around the lake. ‘This rally brings students who wouldn’t normally come to church events,” says Holly Jackaway, senior and captain of FCA at Owen High. The idea for the rally came from a desire to have a network between area churches, explains Father Freeman. “I’d been praying that week that God would open the door for connection between churches. Later that week 1 got a call from Paul [Kendall] and that’s how it started.” Schools represented at the rally included, Owen High School, Owen Middle School, and Asheville Christian Academy (ACA). This year’s SYATP drew 54 students from Owen High, 75 from ACA, and 144 from Owen Middle.
