Gets Down and Dirty

“The best place to study nature is to
get out in nature.” Comments Dr. Brad
Daniel, Science Professor. August of
2003 students were able to divulge
in the 2 annual Environmental Field
Studies programs.
The field studies program provides
opportunities to study natural areas
intensively through on-site class peri
ods. “These programs are designed
to provide both depth and breadth of
knowledge to students. We wanted a
program that would be able to go both
wide and deep,” Daniel remarks.
Three new courses were added to
the program. The Natural History of
the Great Smokey Mountains National
Park, The Environmental Perspectives
and Cultural History of the Cherokee,
and Malawi Watersheds. Dr. Brad
Daniel, Dr. Brian Joyce, and Profes
sor Mike Sonnenburg taught these
courses.
Students who were able to be
involved in the field immersion
experience were either plunged into
one particular ecosystem or traveled
the countryside studying grasslands,
glaciers, to the rocky mountain peaks
of the Great Smokey Mountains. “1
think it’s a great opportunity for me
and other students as well. 1 love the
idea of the courses.” Freshman Keri
Trahan remarked.
Senior Noah Swaty, who was
involved in the Smokey Mountains,
and Cherokee courses, remarks, “I
am a huge fan of field studies classes.
The Smokies course really helped me
in furthering my OE major. 1 was also
given a better graph of what the South
ern Appalachian Mountains are like.”
Students who are taking the course
have numerous intensive require
ments to meet before and after their
experience. Depending on the course
and professor, there is a short but
concentrated list of goals and expec
tations that need to be met, ranging
