recent news Alumni Surface in Government Ranks •Excerpt from Class Notes Roger Smith (pictured here), Montreat Alximnus Class of 1979, was appointed by President Bush in June 2003 as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Littoral and Mine Warfare Systems. He is the first person fi-om the Department of the Navy to serve in this position. His responsibilities include the research, development, and acquisition of imdersea weapons and sensors, mine war fare and mine countermeasures technologies, Marine Corps ground and amphibious weapon systems, conventional munitions, and several precision strike weapons programs. Class of 1981 Alumnus, David Minyard, has been involved with many high profile projects for the Armed Forces of the United States since 1987. He now works as the Liaison to the Pentagon Chaplain’s Office, an outreach to Pentagon workers. Also, he is working with the September 11 monument in the Pentagon. New Faculty Fill Holes in Various Departments ■Staff Reports The recent appointment of three professors filled vacancies in the Spanish, English, and History departments. After serving a one-year posi tion at the college, Dr. Horacio A. Hernandez accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Spanish. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Dr. Hernandez received his Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from the State University of New York at Albany, where he also earned an M.A. in Spanish Ameri can literature. He received his bachelors in English with a minor in French from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Dr. Hernandez served ten years in the Peace Corps in the Domini can Republic. In addition, he has taught at the high school and college level, notably, Houghton College in New York. He is the author of Divagaciones poeticas: Poemario, a collection of poems published in 1991. Dr. Hernandez and his wife and children reside in Black Mountain. Dr. Thomas Mannarino has embraced the appointment of Assistant Professor of Eng lish after teaching part-time at Montreat this past year. Dr. Mannarino holds a Ph.D. in English with a specialty in Creative Writing from Florida State University; his secondary area is 20"’-century American literature. He holds an M.A. from Florida State in English: Creative Writing, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photojournalism from the University of San Francisco. For his dissertation. Dr. Mannarino completed a novel entitled The Fictionist. He worked as a photographer, features writer, and associate editor of various newspapers before shift ing to higher education. Dr. Man narino is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction and has won scholarships and awards for both his creative writing and his teaching, including the Society of Newspaper Design Award of Excellence. He currently resides in Arden. Mark McCarthy has accepted the role of Assistant Professor, of History and will begin teaching in the fall. McCarthy, who has taught history courses at Notre Dame since 1998, is currently finishing his doctoral dissertation in His tory there. His doctoral work has focused on Russian history and literature, with studies in German and Western European history. He holds two bachelor’s degrees - Russian History and European History (Iowa University and Calvin College); two Master’s degrees - Russian Literature and History (Iowa University and Notre Dame). He has also studied in Moscow and St. Petersburg. McCarthy was the 2003-2004 recipient of the Kellogg Disser tation Year Fellowship at Notre Dame. He has also won awards from the Pew Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, and from the U.S. State Department. Nelson Bell Library’s Hamilton Gallery, April 24 -29. . Pinaire, a native of East Lansing, Michigan, now lives in Montreat along with her parents and brother. She will earn her bachelor’s in business administration/marketing this May with a minor in art. At Montreat, Pinaire played for the tennis team and is currently the president of Sigma Alpha Pi, Montreat’s first sorority. “Art is one of God’s gifts to me. My family has always nurtured my creative side, and without their support I would have shrugged it off long ago,” Pinaire says. “I hope my paint ings will encourage others to see the beauty of color, simplicity, and brush strokes.” Pinaire’s exhibit of ten still- life paintings demonstrates her exploration and development in new fields of art. “1 began oil painting a year ago.
