school stato SGA President Introduces 2004-2005 Legislative Council. by Lewis Beach and Tony Moreau I am your SGA President, Lewis Beach. I hail from South Carolina, and have come to North Carolina to study outdoor educa tion. I am your servant, and seek input and suggestions from all students. Beside me are men and women who also seek to serve. I would like to take a moment to introduce to you my fellow SGA members: Our Vice President and Judi cial Chair is Tony Moreau. He is an inactive Marine who is majoring in Bible and Religion with a concentration in world views. Tony has no qualms about speaking his mind or asking others their opinions. Carrying the class banner towards graduation is Senior Class President, Kaylin Fisher, a 20-year-old Fort Myers, Florida native majoring in human ser vices. Kaylin calls for all seniors to rally together so that they are not strangers upon graduation. She challenges the Senior Class to be servant leaders in their final year at Montreat. Stepping out in faith is Junior Class President Laura Gortney, from Western North Carolina. She is a Bible and Religion major with concentrations in Youth Ministry and Christian Education. She also hopes to minor in outdoor education. She enjoys meeting new people and trying new activities so “hollar” at her whenever you so desire. Proudly leading the charge of our second year students is Sophomore Class President Shanika Weakly, a two-sport star in soccer and basketball for the Lady Cavs. She is a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, but has spent much of her life in Nurem berg, Germany as well as having lived in Queens, New York. Her travels and fluent German have led her to major in international business with a minor in German languages. If you want Shanika’s opinion on a subject, just ask. Our newest class is led by Freshmen Class President, Jay- lynn Richard. Jaylynn joins us from Fayetteville, North Caro lina. She plans to major in ele mentary education with a minor in Spanish. Here on campus, you may see her running from class to class, studying, and running the power point presentations for Chapel Band. She also enjoys spending time with Jason Fisher, giving hugs and working for Dr. Cain. Affairs Officer, Jen Puckett, is a business administration major with a concentration in management. She hails from Rock Hill, South Carolina. Jen dreams of owning her own “Complete make-over” busi ness one day. Jen has also been dating Eric Spoon for 10 months and has many plans for the future, although she is letting God guide her every step of the way. Special Events Coordinator, Jessica Pazur, is a junior major ing in human services. She is originally from a small town out side Charlotte, North Carolina. Although unsure of exactly what she wants to do after graduation, she may move to New York to coordinate fashion shows for a Versace line. Ultimately she would like to use that money to run an orphanage in Jamaica, where she hopes to retire to as soon as possible. Student Activities Represen tative Stephanie Kates is the Chairperson of Student Activi ties. She is a junior majoring in Bible and Religion with a concentration in cross-cultural studies and a minor in Spanish. She is also the Lady Cavaliers’ Basketball Manager. Her favor ite Bible verse is Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, male nor female, slave nor free; for you are all one in Christ Jesus!” SGA is also very lucky to be guided in our endeavors by Montreat alum and Davis RD Jeremy Burnett, who is this year’s Staff Legislative and Resource adviser to SGA. We would like to thank Jeremy in advance for all his assistance. At this time we are seeking indi viduals to fill the offices of Admin istrative Officer, Off Campus Rep resentative and Campus Ministry Liaison. Anyone interested can contact Tony or Lewis via e-mail or phone. In closing, I would like to say what a privilege it is to serve this student body and challenge each of you to get the most out of your time here at Montreat College. Aetten. from the Editor Hello Fellow Montreatians by Kortney Blythe Well, it’s a new year with new faces, new classes, and of course, new stresses. I’ve come to love The Uonirett Cottage Student Voice WHETSTONE Montreal College Box 839 Montreal, NC 28757 828.669.8012 Ext. 3675 whetstone@montreat.edu Editor in Chief Kortney Blythe Asst. It’s my senior year, and I’m excited to be taking over as Editor in Chief though Tim Tyson’s shoes will be impossible to fill (I’m not going to wear Hawaiian shirts everyday). It is my goal this year to make The Whetstone truly a student news paper. But, for this to happen it will require students’ involve ment (duhl). I crave your input, sugges tions, constructive criticism, ideas and most importantly, your talents. Whether it be in photog raphy, graphic design, web site creation, artwork, writing, or just reading and evaluating the paper, your help is invaluable. In the words of a great philosopher Jerry Maguire, “Help me, help you.” Believe me, I know how busy life gets with jobs, sports, and homework. Just once a week, though, you can skip American Idol and interview President Stmble about the future of the college, research what’s going on with the presidential election or just grab your camera for the evening’s activities and get one of your photos in the newspaper. Anyhow, instead of griping about the problems on campus, do something about them. You’d be surprised at what an article in The Whetstone (read by Alumni, Staffulty and the community) can do to bring about positive change. Thanks for reading and have a marvelous semester and year. The Great Divide: Bush, Kerry, or Neither? More than any election before, this presidential race has polarized the nation. There are insults flung from every direc tion and from both sides. If you are passionate about politics, specifically this presiden tial election, WE WANT YOU! We are looking for three students or staff/faculty to write informed opinion pieces on why we should vote for: George W. Bush/Dick Cheney, John Kerry/John Edwards, or a third-party candidate. If you’re interested please contact the Whetstone (e-mail, phone, or in person). The Whetstone
