arts entertainment Jeff Buckley Grace (Legacy Edition) Chris Warren is a free lance writer from Mooresville, NC. First released ia 1994, Grace received very little fanfare. The only single release ‘Last Good bye’ reached a moderate # 19 spot on Billboard’s Modem Rock charts in early 1995. Topping a few lists for best album, Jeff Buckley was thrust into almost cult status, just as his father, Tim, had done in the late 1960s. Unlike Tim Buckley’s folk-rock style of singing, Jeff incorporated a sultry range of soul and blues with an unmistak able vocal sense. His high falset tos drew the listener into every note of the album. The Legacy Edition expands Grace’s original ten tracks with remastered sound complement ing the original Andy Wallace mix. From the catchy title track to the thumping dmms of‘Dream Brother’ or the excellent cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah,’ time has proven that Grace was one of the infallible albums of the decade. The bonus here comes in two forms: a CD full of outtakes and rare tracks and a DVD of videos and documentary on the making of Grace. ‘Forget Her’ was a track originally slated to appear Katrina Elam Katrina Elam The self-titled debut from Oklahoma native Katrina Elam makes for a promising future. Country music insiders first , learned of the young Elam six years ago. Working at the Okla homa Opry, she was invited to perform with Reba McEntire, and Vince Gill even jumped on stage with her in Oklahoma City. Word spread of her to the famed Music Row, so she packed her bags and headed for Nash ville. Now at age 21, Katrina Elam showcases her talent on her first album by writing nine out of the eleven tracks. Leadoff single Christmas Show Depicts Joy of Season -Press Release National touring theatre com pany, Acts of Renewal, presents a refreshing, delightful yuletide show called, “Rediscover ing Christmas” on Thursday, December 2 at 7:30 pm at Upper Anderson Auditorium. In “Rediscovering Christmas,” professional actors Jim Shores and Carol Anderson-Shores' cap tivate audiences with a series of vignettes that let the young and old step anew into the wonder, the hilarity and the joy of Christ mas. Jim and Carol are repeat per formers with organizations such as Family Life and Focus on the Family. Their material has been aired on PBS and their reputation for excellence in live theatre has been long standing. Gary Lydic of Focus on the Family says, “1 would heartily recommend them, they are the best!” Last year’s performance of “Rediscovering Christmas” was well attended despite being held during an ice storm. There were so many requests for an additional performance by those who couldn’t come due to the weather that a return engagement was planned. Last year’s show will be reprised with the delight ful addition of an adaptation of Truman Capote’s short story, “A Christmas Memory.” This will be the third event of this year’s Montreat College Fine Arts Theatre series. Tom Key’s Oct. 7"’ performance of C.S. Lewis Onstage with a standing room only crowd was a huge success. Audience mem bers came from as far away as Georgia to attend. The Montreat College Fine Arts Theatre Series is offered as • a gift to the college and Montreat community bringing in perfor mances featuring high quality professional Christian theatre artists from across the country. Admission to each event is free with a $5 suggested donation at the door. The oft used live song ‘Kick Out the Jams’ by the MC5 has been widely bootlegged, just as the road version of‘Eternal Life.’ Bob Dylan is tackled on ‘Mama You’ve Been on My Mind’ and Hank Williams on ‘Lost High way.’ The DVD contains four videos: ‘Grace,’ ‘So Real,’ ‘Last Goodbye,’ and ‘Eternal Life’ and all new footage for the song ‘Forget Her.’ This was Jeff Buckley’s only official album. He drowned in 1997 at the age of 30. Although we have lost him, there is evi dence that his music will live on through artists such as Rufus Wainright and Gavin Degraw. ★★★ ‘No End in Sight,’ is a feel good song about love, with a sweeping mandolin background. Elam evokes her country girl groove in ‘I Want a Cowboy’ while revealing her age in ‘Normal.’ Her voice, however, shows a leap in maturity on ‘The Breakup Song. ’ It is a tear- jerking ballad about sad songs, “singers talk about growing up/the first kiss and being in love but nothing hits as close to home as the breakup song.” Another standout is ‘Flowers by the Side of the Road,’ a tragic tale of the evils of drinking and driving involving a couple of high school kids on the way to the prom. Overall, the album proves that Katrina Elam should and will be a force to be reckoned with in country music. front porch We’ve Moved!
