1 sports ROA Oorner by Mary Jane Shafer Right before Thanksgiving break, FCA hosted a Huddle Meeting and Game night, both of which had larger attendances than what has been seen during the fall semester. At the last Huddle Meeting, many members of the basket ball, team along with other students, heard Laura Gortney and Jonathan Bennet recap their experience in leading basket ball camps for three weeks in Northern Thailand this past May. After a visual presentation of the people and places affected by their summer ministry, Bennett encouraged anyone interested in traveling on a similar trip in the future to contact him. If enough interest is shown, FCA will once again visit Thailand this upcom ing summer. At the last FCA Game Night, there was an entertaining volley ball match. The two teams com bined had members representing the Cavaliers coaching staff and the Cavaliers basketball, baseball, tennis, and volleyball teams. Because of the many different team practices at the gym, FCA Puma Plucks Freshmen for Hollywood Weekend by April Heyward had a tough time scheduling Game Nights on a regular basis. However, with more outdoor sports coming next spring, FCA looks forward to a more consis tent showing at Game Nights. Instead of being on Tuesday nights, they will return to being on Monday nights. Next semester, FCA also hopes to increase its ministry to both athletes and coaches. In order to do so, FCA is striving to be more consistent in meetings and to provide opportunities for people to serve. The greatly anticipated annual Mega Huddje Meeting, which includes attendees from FCA on the UNC-Asheville, Mars Hill, and Montreat cam puses, will occur next semester. Some of the upcoming min istries for Montreat students will include baking cookies and other goodies for traveling Cavaliers, providing a brunch for coaches, being enthusiastic fans, and encouraging each other through fellowship and servant- hood. Above all, FCA desires to serve by living by the words of Romans 12:10 that challenges readers to be, “devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Freshman Stefano Leonard! scored an all expense paid trip to hobnob with soccer stars in Hol lywood, CA as the grand prize winner of the PUMA/Eurosport MLS Challenge. A representative from Puma notified Leonard! that his name was picked in an online drawing of 300,000 people a week before traveling to Hollywood. Leonard! signed up for the drawing six months prior to the call and didn’t think anything would come from the drawing. For part of their time in Hol lywood, they mingled and conversed with some of the top stars in Major League Soccer (MLS) when they attended the MLS Media Luncheon on Friday and the Gala Awards Party at the Uni versal Globe Theatre on Saturday night. This team is deeper, and more versatile.” There is a little more than two months left in their season. “Our immediate goal is to be more competitive within the AAC” Hagan says. “We’ve struggled a bit in the last two years and we’d like to see improvement within the conference.” The next home game for the Lady Cavs after Christmas break is scheduled for Friday, January ■28 at 5:30pm against Covenant College.
