Hello again, Whetstone
Below is a letter we recieved from a Warren Wilson student, Michael Silverman,
who asks for a dialogue between him and a Montreat student to create a rumor-
smashing relationship between our two schools. What an opportunity this is to go
beyond the Montreat bubble and build relationships with a school that is so close
to us, yet so far away.
I ask that if you choose to respond to him yourself, you do so with respect and
in a way that respesents our school well; i.e., don’t be rude, you guys. I have to say
that, even though I know none of you would intentionally do anything of the sort.
I also think, besides people individually responding to Michael, that it would be a
learning experience for the whole school if someone volunteered to have an ongo
ing dialogue with him to be printed each month in The Whetstone.
If you think you would be interested in being involved with this awesome op
portunity, e-mail me at whetstone@montreat.edu, and let me know.
I hope exams go well for everyone, and you are all in my prayers. Be safe over
break, and have an ama2ing Christmas and New Year. See you all in 2008!

Dear Whetstone editor and friends at Montreat,
I am a Warren Wilson student who frequents the Moments coffeeshop, which allows
me the pleasure of reading every quality installment of The'Whetstone. While I feel the
verse of the month is splendorous and the “Meet Montreat” section is informative, I still
do not feel like I know you guys. It is this, my friends at Montreat, that I feel needs to
change.
I am sure that, as we have heard outlandish rumors about your school, you’ve heard
some inaccurate details about ours—a negative symptom of our social disconnectedness
that I hope we can mend. You’ve probably heard we are all environmentalists. We’re not;
I, for one, am a nihilist. I’ve heard that all of you guys wear pants on your arms and walk
around on your hands. Please, say it isn’t so. Due to these rumors, the fleeting interac
tions between students of our schools resemble the one I had last Thursday.
I was contra dancing with a lovely girl from your college and I asked her, “I hear that
it is against the rules for you to have R-rated movies on your campus. Is that true?”
Her response, preceded by a confused giggle, was, “I think I have one in my room.”
We then proceeded to finish the dance in silence. This was clearly a painfully awkward
conversation that I might wish upon someone I really didn’t like, but since I don’t want
this to happen again to my friends and myself, I am putting forth the best two sugges
tions I can think of to prevent future discomfort.
I don’t watch TV, but a friend was telling me about this show where mothers of dif
ferent families are hilariously swapped for a week, only to experience the difficulties
suffered by others and learn a valuable lesson. Needless to say. I’m not friends with this
person anymore, but I think that the students of our schools would benefit from and
enjoy such a unique experience. We could even film it.
Perhaps another applicable idea to build social cohesion is if we have one-on-one
student conferences. I would like to volunteer myself to be the first Warren Wilson stu
dent to meet and converse with Montreat students.
In the spirit of amity and clearing up silly rumors, I would like my e-mail
(msilverman@warren-wilson.edu) to be made public so there is someone to write to if
you guys need any rumors cleared up. I hope we can all enjoy our academic futures.
Your friend,
Michael
